DEFENSE! All of Freddie Roach's currently trained top fighters have absolutely no defense, yes I know Toney had a great defense, but I'm talking about current. Amir Kahn, Chavez Jr. and Pacquiao, while all champions, they all share the same weakness, no defense. I'm not questioning Freddie's ability to teach, far be it from me to say he can't teach, the man has coached nemerous champions, and is in the Hall of Fame 1 second after he retires, but my question is, does Freddie know defense?

A little over dramatic are we? If you take a look at Freddie's top fighters, PAC, Amir and Jr.....2 out of the 3 have very good defense stats...it's not the James Toney defensive mastery where he can fight in the pocket, utilizing the philly shell, shoulder roll and pull counters but James didn't have the quickness, speed and wheels that Manny has either.

What Freddie is a master of is taking a fighter and fine tuning their style...he doesn't break them down and re-creates them...he simply figures out their qualities, attributes and strengths and hones them.

So many times you see fighters who change trainers who try to re-make them into a completely different fighter which sometimes works.....but 99% of the time, fails.

To question Freddie as a trainer and his abilities you must be the ghost of Eddie Futch.

This. A lot of people don't realize this. Pac's defense has gotten WAY better than it used to be. He leaves fights often without much markings on his face. His defense has improved in the past few fights he has had. Amir Khan has poor defense.

Kahn lost his last fight because he couldn't keep Peteson off of himAlthough Kahn was effective in landing on the inside, Peterson easily walked through Kahn defense. I think Pacquiao's "improved" defense is as much of a myth as his overall improvement. Roach has developed Pacquiao's right hand, but Pacquiao's defense is as por now as it's always been. Pacquiao's high guard was very penetrable, Bradley was very effective to the body when Pacquiao was in his high guard, and Pacquiao rarely moved his feet when Bradley went to the body. Now most will say Badley didn't have enough power to really threaten Pacquiao, but Pacquiao responded to some of those body shots. When Chavez fought Lee, he was hit easily, and displayed no defense at all in that fight, and took a lot of unnecessary shots, in fact I believe Lee was actually ahead in the fight before he got stopped.

Watching Khan/Peterson and Pacquiao/Bradley. His boxers seem to lack intenesty. It cost both Khan and Pacquiao in those fights.

The only "myth" pertaining to Manny is the mythical "A side" that gives him super powers. Pac has improved immensely in his overall fight game.....both in offense and defense. He is obviously a much more offensive force than defensive but that is the part of his game that has brought him the most success.

To give TIM any credit is being extra nice as all of his work on June 9 looked weak and ineffective....but yea.....the body shots from TIM was the best work he put in....

However....you have to realize the high guard for Pac is a way to bait reluctant fighters to come at Pac. In order to give Manny counter opportunities that aren't there a lot of the time because what usually ends up happening is his opponents hop on their bikes and engages less. Pac feels he can take a lot to the body and gives that to his opponents much of the time.

This is boxing......its not easy turning a diamond in the rough into a flawless gem. It takes time, consistency, commitment and synergy between both trainer and fighter.....especially if you are a new trainer.

Lee was landing a lot but he wasn't winning......for 3 shots he landed to Chavez 1, he still wasn't as effective as Jr in terms of damage inflicted.

You can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink.

Pacquiao's best defense is his offense, though he has improved.

Khan gets out of his gameplan easily in the ring if things aren't going his way, who knows how good his defense really is in the gym.

Chavez may know some defense, but he'd rather stalk forward and brawl.

It's tough to say how much defense Roach is teaching really. Gameplans change in a hurry once the bell rings.

I agree with other posters. I don't see where Pacquaio has bad defense.

Khan does need to work on his inside game, but even if he improves signficantly, that will still be his weakness concerning most opponents.

If Khan allows his opponent to get inside in the first place, he lost half the battle.

Defense alone cant win you fights, they focus more on offense because that is how you win... Sure they dont have defense like Floyd or Swea Pea but who does really? there has never been a time in which our champions or fighters was filled with defensively slick guys, you only have had a couple here couple there.
