Does GGG get a lot of credit if he manages to beat Canelo?

I also want to mention that Finito Lopez is similar to GGG where he dominated a weak division and made 21 title defenses, he ended up in the IBHOF in his first year of eligibility. I have no doubt that the same will apply for GGG. He’s a first ballot HOFer because of his title defenses, exciting fan friendly fighting style, and famous rivalry with Canelo.

yes, and by todays standards, its probably enough. but if he beats canelo, its a whole other world of achievements. its historic on so many levels. dethroning the p4p king at the only weight where he is undisputed. at his age. in a new division. level of oposition need no longer be challenged, he is the man at 168.

Agreed with everything you said. It’s one of the reasons why I’ll be rooting for GGG to pull off the upset. A win over a guy like Canelo would be historic, especially at his age.

finito also finished undefeated. his competition might have also been weak, but there was no other fighter around to prove it.

He did retire undefeated but he didn’t test himself enough IMO. At least GGG fought someone of high caliber like Canelo. Lopez could have faced Chiquito González (although they shared the same trainer) or Michael Carbajal. He also had the body frame and size to move up to Flyweight to really test himself against the likes of Mark Johnson or Yuri Arbachakov.

Beautiful technician and stylist, one of my all time favorites. Its why Bam Rodríguez is also one of my current favorite fighters to watch right now. I see elements of Finito Lopez with Canizales’ footwork with Bam.

I think Finito beats Chiquito and Carbajal. I really do wish we could have seen Finito fight Too Sharp Johnson, that would have been a brilliant match up.

He also has a 22-1-1( 20 ko's) middleweight title fight record. The highest ko % in middleweight title fight history.

yes. they both have that smoothness to their movement. they understand the mechanics, the positioning. it comes natural to them. bam seems way more abitious, and determined. i think hes gonna go looking for his ceiling.

He's already beaten Clenelo...So doing it again won't be a big deal for me...

We pick too much in the present but maybe not enough in the past. If Canelo wins this fight, someday the series will be 2-0-1 and basically be in the same bucket as Fury vs Wilder.

You can already see it with Pacquiao Marquez. That series could have been 3-1 for JMM (or any other scoring you like) and history would remember both guys very differently.

It's a shame we never got the Charlo fight, though truth be told after GGG mangled him Charlo would have gotten tossed in that "he was never good to begin with" bucket like some of these other guys

I would have wanted to see GGG face either Jermall Charlo or Erislandy Lara.

I’ve always likened Canelo/GGG with Pac/JMM when it comes to their showdowns and the controversy that it produced when it came to their close fights. So many people were very divided and also bitter about the more popular fighter getting the nod while others refuse to acknowledge that the losing fighter truly lost. It’s eerily identical. I’ve even made threads about it as well.
