Yes , and even more into it with me, as you touched on, was the mental part .. I really think Marvin thought and wanted to prove that he could easily outbox Ray .. Didn't matter coming out switch stance for the first 2 rounds, he was going to outbox Ray. He underestimated Ray. Also, when Ray would do his typical showboating, bolo punches, putting his chin out pulling it back, etc.. Marvin would mimic him and try and match it.. Just wasn't Marvins game and losing focus. I mean I guess for me Marvin lost this Mentally more than he did physically, imo

 

You are right. His mental approach to this fight was not good. He came out to the song War I remember. He looked strong to me, but not punching with snap. The punches looked heavy but not the snap he did with Hearns.. I forgot that waving of his glove which Marvin did as he followed Ray..Now I remember. He was just walking following Leonard waving his gloves. It was not a good fight for him. And coming out righty like you said, showed how he underestimated Ray and thought he would outbox him. Then Ray got his momentum and he took over.

I still can't believe that Ray got in the ring and made that retirement speech:

"Me and Marvin would be a great fight, but it will never happen"

Marvin must have been raging.

Regarding Michael Katz, the last I heard of him was when he was inducted into the hall of fame in 2012.

 

I don't think Marvin was shot, but he was definitely faded.

Yes, Ray got into his head.

I can remember Gill Clancy (a great commentator) being puzzled that Marvin wasn't fighting as a southpaw.

He really gave away those early rounds.

 

It is unbelievable. I didn't know it until years later, but Hagler was upset about it. Ray set the stage to announce the fight and says it won't happen with Marvin there. Amazing balls to do that.. Ray wanted attention anyway he could get it.

 

Hagler once said "It's Hard to do 5am roadwork when you're sleeping in silk pajamas".
After years waiting for a title, Hagler slowly lost his edge. And SRL took his soul .

Maybe he loses to a couple of those guys in 87.
