Does Harry Wills have a case to be ranked higher than Jack Dempsey?

This is the reasonable way to approach any patently biased reports from either end of the spectrum.

Your article is talking about his fight with Firpo when wills was past his prime at 35 and already been made to wait for 5 years! Of course Wills was declining at that point. Still the 35 year old wills manhandled Firpo the entire fight tossed him around like a ragdoll. Imagine what the 1918-1920 wills would have done? I can only imagine how physically strong Wills was in his prime

You praise Dempsey for throwing short brutal hooks, yet referee McFarland here states wills landed a perfect short right hand that did not travel more than 6 inches, and you hold it against him?

All I did was post the report they aren't my words ! I just pointed out that the crowd didnt think much of it as a rebuttal to Seamus saying ,[perhaps sarcastically,] that it was a great fight. If you want to put the fight in context Norfolk was 5 8" Wills 6'2"with about 30lbs between them.

Norfolk twice beat Billy Miske so clearly he was a worthy heavyweight contender

You keep throwing around Norfolk's win over a sick man that probably should have been hospitalized as if it means something. He couldn't even knock Miske out. Let's settle this and do a comparison of how these so called fighters that Dempsey ducked did against Dempsey's title opposition.

Sick Miske - Greb? Only could manage a decision despite beating on Miske for 10 rounds. Norfolk? Took a decision in a close fight, couldn't even knock Miske out. Dempsey? Annihilated him. Early.

Bill Brennan - Greb? Took 4 decisions. Greb couldn't even win the majority of rounds in their 3rd fight. Dempsey? Slaughtered him in the 12th round. The first fight Dempsey knocked Brennan down for the first time in his career...then 5 more times. Greb fought a ruined version of Brennan.

Carpentier - Jeannette? Was given a gift decision by the referee that the ringside reporters disputed. Dempsey? Annihilated Carpentier in the 4th round once he was given the OK.

Gibbons - Greb? "took of the licking of his life" at the hands of Gibbons. Greb only won one round in their first fight. It wasn't until he finally caught a break against Gibbons in an electrical storm that he was able to win a newspaper decision which was influenced by the description of one man's opinion from the 6th round on. The last fight Greb fought a stale version. Gibbons got the better of Greb in their 4 fights. Dempsey? Won every round off of Gibbons who fought on the defensive and tried to avoid the fighting the entire night.

Firpo - Wills? Went the entire 12 rounds against a guy that gave no shits about the finer aspects of boxing. Dempsey? Beat the **** out of Firpo and put him down for the full count in two.

These guys don't hold a candle to Dempsey's work.

Harry Wills lives through rough times, he got the shaft time and time again. He got robbed at a chance to make history. Dempsey was portrayed by the white press of the 20s as some sort of mystical Achilles...but in reality he never defeated the best heavyweights of his era. So we will never know how good he actually was, or if it was all hype. Even so, the white press did put enormous press on Dempsey to fight wills.

    Here’s another one for you

1920-07-28 The Boston Post (page 10)
    Boxing Gossip by Doc Almy
As for material gain, while Wills has gathered a bundle of shekels, and must have raised Cain with the gamblers, his triumph may be but temporary, as there is no sign that Dempsey will stake his title and fight him. As the other white heavies have been giving Wills the sidestep for a long time, it is not improbable that they will continue to do so. At this writing it would appear that Mr. W. had fought himself back into the "Black League," all of which is tough on Wills, who with the exception of Dempsey, appears to be about the best of the whole heavyweight flock.

    THanks to Seamus here

    Wills' take on it...

"I am discriminated against in violation of every principle on which this democracy was founded. I am an American citizen and a clean, decent man. I am a tax payer. I have made an honest living all my life. Never once have I done anything that bred even the slightest suspicion as to my honesty, integrity, and respectability. I can't understand why I am not given a chance.

"Firpo hasn't a chance against Mr. Dempsey. He doesn't belong in there with him. It is nothing short of criminal to stage such a match...

"I note that I have been criticized in some quarters for not fighting. The fault is not mine...

"Do you think you could some of these so-called contenders in the ring with me. Gibbons? Jess Willard shunned me as Dempsey is shunning me.

"I could get matches. I could have all the fights I want if I did a certain kind of business. I don't want to meet a lot of set-ups and high divers... I have never avoided a good man, but I'll confess I am willfully avoiding the bad ones.

"I am willing to fight any first class heavyweight on a winner-take-all basis."

(In response to a winner-take-all with Dempsey)

"Certainly I will, and I'll do it with a smile."

One of them was knocked down and knocked out of the ring, and seems to have been illegally helped back in. The other wasn't. Actually, it is quite easy to say that Wills did better even though at 35 his best years should have been well behind him, while Dempsey was 28. Wills never came close to losing.

    Thanks to Senya for below

Wills won every round of the encounter, such as it was. Possibly some writers may have given their newspaper decision in favor of Firpo having one round, or even two, but the most optimistic Firpo writer we met was Nat Fleischer, who said he thought Firpo had one round even, but could not think what round that was

Thanks to Senya, here is An article that refute your claim Firpo was hot fat and out of shape. The paper describes Firpo in “prime condition” for wills

He had some good results it cannot be denied.Norfolk was simply outmanned by Harry imo, he was too big and powerful for a guy who was essentially just a lightheavy .

The 20's was robbed of it's premiere heavyweight super fight. Dempsey has an asterisk next to his name and record. No one knows who would have won in say 1919 or 1920 but the fault lies on Team Dempsey. For this and inactivity and the fact that he essentially began to dissipate as a fighter July 5th, 1919 , Dempsey is an underachiever for me .. a great icon but a bit of an unknown.

Wills never came close to losing, and he never came close to stopping Firpo he just contented himself with winning a points scoring maul.
Dempsey went in there to get Firpo out as quick as possible that's how he fought, he took risks. That's also why he was in million dollar gates and Wills was fighting for peanut butter sandwiches.
Still claiming a typewriter helped Dempsey back in the ring? Must have been some machine!
For your information Dempsey tore his rectum open when he landed on that table and badly bruised his spine on that old Corona .He wasn't illegally helped back in the ring, the reporters where trying to get a snarling
wounded beast off of them,a192pound fury who was kicking and clawing away in an effort to get himself back in the action. It was sheer self preservation.

He kicked judge Kid McPartland in the eye!
The difference is when Dempsey went down he got up in a rage and tore straight back in.Wills was sometimes criticized for lacking that same appetite for the fire when things got hot, some ringsiders thought his ko by Uzcudun was a bit tame. The quality of the Paulino film doesnt allow any real criticism of a surrender imo.

Check the weights of Firpo for the two fights.
