What does having a championship belt mean to all of you? What does it mean in boxing? Is the fighter who holds the belt a REAL "World Champion?"

Here is my argument...we have champions like Celestino Caballero who is the WBO champion at 122 but yet Rafael Marquez (not a current champ) is ranked higher than him and many other fighters and "champions" in that division.

Andre Berto and Juan Manuel Lopez are both champs but people say they are not ready to take on the toughest guys in their division.

    What do you guys think?

Nope. The alphabet soup of belt groups is just fine with letting money get ahead of ability.

I would say that it makes them a World Champion from a technical standpoint I suppose. It does not make them THE champion however.

yes. what do you have to show if you dont have any? thats why they made them. politics or not, it a legal basis on showing proof. Without one, you're just like any wannabe's claiming he's the best.

I generally try go buy whatever goes holds the lineal title, but in other cases I recognize the best in the division as the champion in the weight class. So Antonio Margarito, while he may not have the lineal belt, I would consider him the champion at 147 because he beat Cotto who was recognized as the best in the division and had generally fought the highest level of competition.

Terrible example. Unofficially Wlad is clearly the man at HW. He is talking about alphabet bums that aren't close to the top tier of fighters in the division.

Yes. But having one of the belts does not them 'the world champ' just 'a world champ'.

To answer the main question yes and no. Depends on the fighter.
