Does having a higher intelligence equate to ring smartness?

For starters, Tyson seems not very smart intellectually yet he has his own effective way.

Mayweather seems like a very dumb person based on his interviews alone, yet can be very smart in dissecting his opponents.

Juan Diaz is finishing up his degree and yet he seems to fight with only one style, winning or losing.

On the other hand, Barrera is a lawyer or accountant (not so sure now) and he is both very intelligent outside and inside the ring.

    The question :

How much does actual intelligence help someone in the ring?

There are many different types of intelligence. Ring intelligence is something that just comes naturally. People do it without thinking about it. It is more of a feeling. It is not connected to IQ which is based in logical reasoning etc.

i disagree, intelligence is nurtured, you learn from many hours of practice.

That is actually the point I am trying to make. Some people diss fighters because they nevr were able to finish eduction. Pac is labelled as a fighter who does not have brains while Mayweather is one who has in most to most of the posters here.

My opinion is that actual intelligence is overrated when it comes to fighting. Either you are born with natural instinct to fight or you are not. And that differentiates a mediocre to average fighter from the truly gifted ones.

You can make a fighter become Juan Diaz by proper training but you can never make a sugar ray leonard out of anybody.

Intelligence is both nature and nurture. I don't care how much you nurture a ******ed kid, he's still gonna be slow.

Your way of thinking might be kind of flawed. Scientific studies say knowledge and intelligence are two different things. Intelligence has more to do with mental quickness than book smarts.

I think in ring intelligence has to do with intelligence, but also repetition and knowledge.

Bernard Hopkins, James Toney, Roy Jones and Oscar De La Hoya are all intelligent inside and outside the ring.

Intelligence does not only comprise what you actually know from f=books, infact far from it.

Correct its a specific kind of intelligence. I think James Toney has the most ring intelligence while Oscar has the most outside the ring intelligence.

Mayweather isnt the smartest in or outside the ring, he has physical talent and a lot of knowledge.

The goal is to beat another man unconscious with your hands. How much intelligence does that take? Really, it's all about instinct and ability to keep your cool in the ring. That does not necessarily take intelligence.

I remember watching Roy Jones fight Lou Dell Valle, a fighter who was as fast as him, and he had enough ring intelligence to break the guys body down and then work his way up. Some boxers are head hunters and sure you can teach a fighter to go to the body but you cannot teach what Roy was doing in that fight.

And James Toney almost never has physical advantages in his fights and he wins on ring intelligence alone. Outside the ring Roy Jones was smart enough to be one of the best at hosting boxing events, if you listen his vocabulary and ability to speak, reveals he has intelligence. Antonio Tarver is another guy who has intelligence outside the ring.

Now look at Mayweather speak. Nobody would want him hosting a public event. I'm not saying Mayweather is stupid, but his intelligence is average.
