In today's era of giants, and a few notable giant slayers, there’s been a debate about how much size and height matters at the highest level of heavyweight. And that has me thinking a lot about Joe Louis. Could Canelo had done better v Louis than two ton Galento? The Modern Martial Artist This content is protected
In certain weight divisions i think it does. The higher you go being taller should help with height and reach disparities. It mostly depends on the individual and fighters can have different body types, reach...etc... I think 5'7'' at heavyweight would put you at a huge disadvantage if your opponent is 6'5''. I think doing better than someone your own height is a moot point unless you actually win the fight against one of these giants today.
The shortest heavyweight champion of the past 10 years is 6’2, so yeah, it’s gotta. I’ll say that Ruiz looks like he is only 6’ but I’d have to see him in person or video measured. Still, no champs under 6’ since RJJ and no legitimate champion under 6’ since Tyson.
Height is important but reach is honestly more important especially if you are an outside fighter that relies on straight punches (Jab, Straight Right). If you don't have height or a long reach you had better be able to get inside like a Frazier, Duran or more recently Canelo.
Not really. Ive seen some taller guys get knocked out by shorter guys, simply because they were more skilled and more duarable than their opponent. Now if youre a taller fighter with those same attributes i just named, then the smaller man is in serious trouble most of the time. Hence the adage " A good/great big man, will always beat a good/great little man". Though thats not always true.
It depends on individual attrubutes like reach and the ability to use what you've got to the max. I think at heavy there is more disparity but there is with weight as well. I think a lot of the old time fighters get underated for there size but the Brown Bomber and Rocky would not ne fighting at heavy it would be light heavy or cruiser.
No, Roy Jones was never a legit heavy and Canelo would be nowhere near Galento`s weight, he`d have a huge power disadvantage, plus putting on weight doesn`t always make you punch harder, Galento was a natural heavy, Roy Jones never had heavyweight power.
yes. if you are putting together a fighter, that can physically use the most tools in the boxing toolbox, then longer and taller is more desirable than shorter and more compact.
