does holyfield get any credit for beating buster douglas?

People fault Douglas more than credit Holy for that win but it is what it is. Holyfield, counting all the four major sanctioning bodies defeated nearly twenty world champions and at heavyweight alone there are several fighters that he beat far better than that version of Douglas. It's no wonder it doesn't get mentioned much.

Not really. Douglas was actually a solid fighter, not great but solid. He had reeled off a pretty impressive win streak after basically quitting while ahead of Tony Tucker, including defeating Oliver Mcall to get his shot at Tyson. He was focused and at his best leading up to and including the Tyson fight. After though he reverted back to something worse than he had ever been.

The Buster that fought Holy was not the same one who fought Tyson.

 

Holyfield gets some credit for doing his job, TRAINING HARD, and taking care of business in the ring.

It's not some great win due to the opposition though. Douglas showed up terribly out of shape and looking for a paycheck. One of the most disgraceful efforts in a big fight, ever.

I'm not one of those overly harsh fans that thinks fighters should never ever quit and call them cowards and whatnot, but fighters at least should put in the proper effort during training to try to give themselves a good chance at winning the fight. Especially if people are paying good money and the fighter is getting 8 figures.
