It is skill what Bernard has and positioning and a great tactician, and that is why the thread was made. I would say Floyd has the best footwork today. As for Bernard, he has great experience and that helps him in the ring and also to handpick top fighters. Thomas Hearns when he fought Hill never let Virgil get good distance since Tommy jabbed him on the outside and Virgil couldn't step inside to counter. Styles make fights. One thing about the fight on Sat. is the Cloud was smaller than Hopkins, which surprised me. I am surprised Cloud was champion to be honest. Easy picking for Bernard, but impressive for a guy 48. I want to see Hopkins beat Dawson or Ward before I say it was an ATG win. He has kept his body in good shape and boxing today has some mediocre champions.
but their handspeed was better and they won the fights. It was a good win but he handpicked Cloud. Hopkins knew he had a guy he could beat. Hopkins has been in the game for 24 or so years.
I fail to see how Floyd has better footwork than Bernard when he rarely controls the center and frequently gets rushed to the ropes. Floyd does great work off of the ropes, but it's also an area he drops rounds or gets caught at. Floyd has great footwork setting up his counters but he backs up in straight lines so often. There's nothing "handpicked" about fighting the best LHW fighters (champions) consecutively. Pascal, Dawson, Cloud.
I agree with what you said here about Floyd and going to the ropes. I think Floyd's problem is he could win the rounds in ring center but he is afraid of being countered, and for some reason he doesn't seem confortable in ring center. Look what happened with Mosley. So he goes to the ropes where he has better defense and he can control the distance of his opponent better and smother some punches then he counter better, although Cotto did good work because his hands are shorter and and he had good handspeed, but Cotto does not take good enough punches to keep it going. Guerrero is going to be tough for some rounds and Guerrero looks strong and bigger than Cotto was, but eventually Floyd will win that fight and will spend a lot of time on the ropes. I just think Floyd has better handspeed and footspeed than Bernard, and if both guys are just as efficient in foot positioning, I have to give it to the faster guy.
about the last part. Hopkins has a plan. He wins the title against guys like Pascal and Cloud who are not good champions, and that gives him some leverage, then he fights a better guy. If he loses he lost a title and his career is still ok as long as he is not knocked out and he can fight again. I doubt he will fight Ward. Cleverly? not sure.
easy to look good against lacy 2.0 who just follows you around the ring like an idiot. I would say bhops best asset is his ring IQ, he made cloud look like a fool.
Pascal is not a good champion? What does that make Dawson? Cloud was at the very least a good fighter; bad fighters don't beat Glen Johnson. Floyd's not demonstrating better footwork against similar or lesser opponents. Efficiency and speed are not the only factors, effectiveness supersedes both. If Floyd is not the best at controlling the center then how can his footwork trump Hopkins'? Because he can shuffle a bit faster? That footspeed is useless once he's backed up, until he takes a side-step. But Hopkins forgoes that backpedal routine most of the time and makes the fighter give him his real estate back immediately by turning him.
And Mayweather's is still pretty good. Idk if it's the best now, but he's very efficient from an old thread http://www.boxingforum24.com/showpost.php?p=12542284&postcount=5 And Mayweather Ortiz showed very good subtle footwork by Floyd. Not too much movement, but precise and well educated foot placement. This content is protected Floyd throws his lead right here, and moves right foot to the right a little and he comes up at a whole different angle.
