Does it really matter if Smith Jr. beats Beterbiev?

Speaking on general achievements, yes, Smith Jr. will become a unified champion at 175, but he'd have to face Bivol again, who most likely beats him a second time. When it comes to mainstream appeal, Joe and Artur aren't really stars by themselves, and are usually only spoken about in the mainstream when it comes to a potential match up against Canelo. Really, does Smith Jr. really gain anything here, other than being a unified LHW champion for no more than a year?

If he somehow pulls it off he becomes the man that overcame the undefeated russian monster and he can bring those belts back home. Smith also had Bivol hurt badly so there's always a chance

But obviously Beterbiev/Bivol is the better fight so it's a win/win for me.

Beterbiev's a beast past his prime. It makes a difference if Smith wins because he facing an elite fighter.

In terms of money (which is all that matters), I agree there isn't much to gain but certainly a bit. He seems unlikely to defend the title unless he takes soft touches.

It would be one of the best wins in boxing so obviously it matters.

This is the logic that is ruining sports, that the whole point is who is #1.

The win would matter because it's a great win.

This sounds like something Carrie would say at the end of a "Sex and the City" intro.

I'm picturing the whole episode now.

A guy picks her up by bragging about how good he is at ski ball. It's going great until a trip to Coney Island when they play and she wins.

With his confidence crushed, he becomes impotent.

Heck yeah it matters. Beterbiev is looked at by many as the best light heavyweight in the world, and is regarded as one of the biggest punchers in boxing today. For smith to pull off this upset would be huge!!

I'm not convinced he's past his prime. He's getting old but his performances seem to be in line with the one against Gvozdyk and he doesn't seem to be losing a step IMO. I could be wrong though, but this fight against Smith should show us if he's really aging in the ring or not.

If Joe pulls this off it is a massive victory and a HUGE feather in his resume. Yes, it matters alot.

    It's that clean living.

Plus his conditioning coach seemed to have a plan on how to prevent/deal with wear and tear on the joints (I might pay him a visit).

Honestly I think that forehead skin is the only thing aging poorly. I have to question his skincare regimen.

    The movies were terrible though.
