I would say it goes a bit like this:

    LOCK: Ali, Louis

MAJOR: Marciano, Lewis, Frazier, Holmes, Holyfield, Tyson, Foreman, Liston, Johnson, Jeffries, Wills, W Klitschko, Dempsey.

MINOR: Langford, Patterson, Charles, Corbett, Walcott, Sullivan, Jackson.

SPECIAL: Norton, Schmeling, V Klitschko, Bowe, Tunney, Fitzsimmons

Where, Locks are inarguably top ten, Major inclusions is where the bulk of the ten should be drawn, Minor is where a stressing of certain factors might make for a compelling case, but from where only 1 or possibly 2 fighters should be drawn, and special, where, for example, people are arguing forcibly over robberies, people are stressing keynote wins very heavily, head to head perhaps, p4p achievements in a HW list etc.

I notice you've promoted Wlad to the higher echelons.

Just supposing he were to get KO'd by Jennings and then again, in a comeback attempt, by somebody else, say Stiverne or Perez, would he still merit being included in 'the fifteen?'

    Interesting.

I was thinking of Roy and how he would have been ranked had he called it quits after Ruiz or even Tarver (1).

Jones's competition is stellar compared to Wlad's though. Two more violent stoppages would drop him down IMO.

Yes, there's little doubt that Jones had better competition and across multiple weight divisions.

But I think he gets unfairly lowered in the rankings on account of what he did after his career should have been over. (Tarver (2) and onwards...)

In the big scheme of things, I would tend to rank him mainly based on his resume up till his 35th birthday, by which time, most are retired.

Few hold Ali's losses to Holmes and Berbick (or even Spinks) against him. He had made his mark after Manila.

It's an interesting question or dilemma for an aging fighter, and a bit of a roll of the dice.

    Money v Legacy.

And so, until the bell sounds for round one, it's only a scheduled event.

    Shouldn't that be unclean ?

I'm pretty sure 'unclean' is a word and, by the looks of it, also an unword, also.

    Life is strange. :think

Without doubt Jack Johnson is a top 10 'Greatest' heavyweight of all time. I think a top 5. But whether or not he was one of the 10 'best' none of us know for sure no matter what we say or how we back it up.

But for what he did, when and how he did it - I'd say he's up there with the very best heavyweights of all time.

Good, 'cause I think he's overrated.
