Well the question is simple: does Shields have a chance to beat GSP?

What gameplan can shields implement to achieve victory?

Lets say your Jake Shields trainer, how would you approach this fight?

No. His best chance is to bring the fight to the ground and GSP's wrestling is too good for him to do this. GSP will knock him out.

Hard to see what he can do. Shields is very far behind GSP as a striker the more they stand the more Shields gets his ass kicked and is closer to be KOed. Shields wins fights 3 ways takedown with postion control and decision, takedown followed by mount and some GNP, takedown pass to dominant postion and submission. Without the takedown he has virtually no chance agianst GSP. Taking GSP down is nearly impossible and if you can like Koscheck did the round may be nearly over leaving you with little time and you may spend alot of energy. Just look at how gassed Shields was vs Kampmann he was just grappling on pure muscle memory late in that fight. The few guys who have had GSP on his back for more then a few secounds like Hughes, Alves, Fitch and Koscheck never passed his guard and Matt Serra's mount doesnt count.

After last night, i would have to say no. Shields best chance to beat gsp is to get him in his back and keep him there. We all know gsp has a good takedown defense and he doesn't spend that much time on his back.

I could see gsp winning this fight similar to the koscheck fight. Complete domination on his feet. Shields has a horrible stand up game so i could see gsp winning by TKO.

    No, not a good chance.

A better chance than most other people who have faced him though.

His gameplan has to be get the takedown, keep top position and work to advance and possibly sub him.

I've said yes due to his grappling. I think GSP could dominate him standing but I hope he grapples with him.

GSP is no idiot. He's going to stand against Shields. Shields doesn't have the wrestling to takedown GSP (hell he struggled against Daley!) and knows it. His best shot is to pull guard and see what he can do from the bottom.

None. For my money GSP's grappling is superior. Plus Shields is boring as **** to watch. Down at 170 he has even less advantages.

I would be intrigued to see the fight at 175-180. Shields knows how to fight at 185 and after this bout GSP has to move up. Shields not killing himself to make weight would help too.

I can see Shields maybe getting 1-2 takedowns or sweeping GSP, his ability to improve position is freakishly good afterall. The problem is though his ability to do anything with it hasnt really been all that impressive vs opponants with decent sub defence.

As has been said Shields ability to make 170 without killing himself really has to be in question aswell.

The same way he has on everybody else he has fought.

It's incredibly hard to take GSP down, that is why he doesn't have a great chance.

It is not impossible, and Shields has good takedowns, he took Hendo down at will. Granted Hendo doesn't have the defense GSP does.

Shields has no chance. I can't believe he's even going to fight at 170 again after his weight-weakened performance vs Kampmann. He will not be able to take GSP down and will get brutalized on the feet. GSP KO2.
