At least he has a strikers chance.

Shields is going to get picked apart on the feet for 5 or get KTFO.

Shields is not taking down GSP and pounding his ass for 1 round, let alone 5.

that's his only chance.. unless he's been training with his striking since the last time i saw him fight he has no chance vs the new improved gsp. GSP would jab him all day and possibly knock him out. Shields striking is ridiculous. He ain't gonna stand with gsp. He has to take him down and try to submit him.

I'd rather see Shields vs Condit and GSP vs Silva.

But if we have to have Shield's or Condit vs GSP. I'd rather have Condit.

Me and you both. Couldnt see the point whatsoever in that fight from the time it was announced. Or even why Kos deserved a second shot. As for Shields? Id rather watch paint dry.

Hardy had a striker's chance, Koscheck had a striker's chance, Alves had a striker's chance, it won't matter as soon as GSP gets hold of them. GSP is lightyears ahead of everyone in terms of a ground game, and even on his feet he's probably the best in the division. Condit's not going to catch GSP as easy as he did Hardy. He's not going to walk into a bomb, quite frankly as soon as you hit GSP with a shot once he doesn't get hit with it again. You have to mix it up, be unpredictable, Paul Daley would be a nightmare if GSP couldn't take him down. His angles and technical ability are quite brilliant, even if he is a bit left hook happy.

It doesn't matter who has a puncher's chance anyway, I feel. You'd have to knock him out with one shot, or GSP's just gonna take you down if he doesn't feel totally comfortable standing with you, and when he knows a fighter's only way to win is on his feet, he's not going to give them the chance. Very smart fighter.

Shields would not be able to keep GSP down for long, or at least not do a whole lot of damage while having GSP on his back(Jake Shields does not have a lot of power in his strikes) is what I am saying.

As far as Shields gameplan: he has to find a way to get GSP out of his element.

I think that means walking GSP down while avoiding takedowns. He would have to counter GSP's jab to do this(preferably with his own jab maybe a right hand) and land strikes to force gsp into retreat/distract him to get a takedown. I believe this is the key because it will make it difficult to for gsp to shoot in while going backwards, and the fact that gsp strength is being able to dart in and out of his opponents range.

Perhaps the use of an inside low kick to offset gsp’s balance when he comes in could disrupt gsp’s timing and possibly set up a takedown.

Just shooting in on gsp without setting it up with strikes will not work especially considering shields lack of speed and explosive power.

It would be interesting to see who is stronger in the clinch. I think this might be another chance to land some strikes elbows uppercuts and knees- watch out for gsp takedowns!

I am still wondering how much gsp’s defense has improved he was keeping his left hand up in his last fight against Koschek and was able to block/avoid most of the right hands that came his way. To land on GSP it would take good timing considering GSP moves around at a quick pace but I think it can be done.

Of course the question is does Shields have the ability to follow through with these plans, Jake is a tough fighter and I doubt GSP would be able to finish him.

Jake Shields best chance might just be to get a sweep on GSP while on his back- but he really cant count on those, considering GSP may have the best top control in all MMA!
