All Toney's cleverness was for naught.

Both Hop and Toney caught Roy - maybe not flush, maybe not their best punches, but fighters with reflex like Roy are very rarely caught clean.

There is no way that a fighter boxed from childhood up to his 30s and didn't get caught once. His chin showed deterioration when he cut all that muscle weight too fast and that's more a resistance and then a mental thing than pure chin IMO.

His chin isn't Hagler but let's not make out like all you had to do was tap his jaw - even then, you gotta land and a fighter like Toney that doesn't move his feet comparatively well isn't gonna get Roy out of there unless Roy stops moving - prime Roy doesn't lose to Toney.

Any good version of Jones absolutely spanks Toney every time out. The stylistic matchup makes Toney look like Jones sparring partner. The fact that it's a mismatch says a lot about RJJ.

Roy Jr beats Toney at 160.

Roy Jr beat Toney at 168.

Roy Jr beats Toney at 175.

Roy Jr beats Toney at cruiser.

Roy Jr beats Toney at heavyweight.

Roy Jr beats Toney in a rap battle, a game of checkers, basketball, ping pong, miniature golf, Trivial Pursuit, a spelling bee or a dance-off.

James Toney beats Roy Jr in a donut-eating contest. (And an excuse-making contest.)

    Jones beats Toney every time.

Just one of those things with boxing, like
    Hearns beats Duran every time.
Barkley beats Hearns every time, Duran beats Barkley.

Toney beats Jones at 190 and heavyweight IMO. Do not see the Jones chin holding up.

It’s a bad matchup stylistically for Toney.
Roy is too fast, Toney is not able to work to his strengths. Roy isn’t going to stand there with him. Toney can neither catch or counter him. Both super talented guys but Roy at his best had reflexes that seemed almost to defy belief. Toney is more of a trained fighter with 100s of hours sparring. Great at subtleties and clever moves that will never be used vs Roy. It did however give him a longer career as an effective fighting force, but he just matches very poorly vs Roy.

The Jones that beat Ruiz has enough speed of foot and enough pop in the right hand to keep Toney honest.

Toney doesn't have the footspeed or footwork to walk Jones down and behind the shoulder roll, without a consistent jab, he is relying on tucking behind the shoulder and catching Roy clean. I don't like that for Toney ... not at all. Roy isn't Jirov or old Holyfield - Toney needs Roy to have faced Ruiz and come back to face Tarver before I entertain James winning.

A better question is does James Toney ever win a round against Roid Jones?

Their match was about as competitive as Holmes-Cobb which also went the distance.

Toney knocks Roy from the Ruiz fight out. Then again, Roy would have a different game plan against Toney, he is pretty clever, so who knows.
