I never encountered someone on here who admits liking him, nor have I in real life. The networks seem to pay him no attention, and I have never heard the buy results of any of the PPV's he's been on. How much of a fan base does this kid really have?
i think he's at a big disadvantage because a) he is not his father b) he didn't have amateur experience people are expecting him to be exactly like his father and guess what....it's not going to happen....how tha hell is he going to top what his father has done??? so people should stop expecting him to surpass his father... people hate on him because he's fighting "bums" ....well since he didn't have amateur experience.....the bums that he is fighting serve as that experience... i think he gets hated on more than necessary...to tell you the truth i don't mind watching his fights. he's not my favorite at all...but i think he's doing well for the sport, and is getting ready for the top challenges. he is still young and learning a lot from roach....but he gets hated on way too much imo
You must not know a lot of Mexican then. I know Freddy on here seems to like him, and I've known a few guys who are genuine fans. Thing is among Mexicans there seems to be as much detractors as there are fans. People aren't stupid and they realize he's no where near as good as the old man.
He was on PPV way too much (from 2007-2010). His last fight wasn't on PPV. His next won't be. He hasn't been on PPV in almost a year.
I don't mind him. Actually I kind of enjoyed watching his fight with Duddy last year. EDIT: I hope he tars and feathers Zbik, although i TOTALLY can't stand he's getting an HBO date for the fight
That's right, HBO has the Zbik fight. But if JCC wins, his mandatory challenger will be Sergio Martinez. Arum is gonna figure a way out of that one, I assure you.
Right, Zbik is on HBO and Lyell was on free TV as well (Fox Sports). There hasn't been a Latin Fury since #15 when he fought Duddy last June. I think Top Rank might be done with that franchise. They haven't ever gone a whole year without one.
To answer the thread question, outside of the built-in Mexican fanbase he has picked up a lot of devout Freddie Roach believers who have decided to give him a chance if Roach saw something in him. Most people did note significant tweaks to his game against Duddy (although he backslid quite a bit against Lyell). Zbik is awful to watch. If Chavez puts on another Duddy-type performance it might not be terrible (especially if Zbik gets KTFO) and he might actually pick up some new fans. If it's closer to the Lyell performance or some of his old phoned-in Latin Fury efforts, not only will it lose him fans it will be one of the worst bouts ever telecast on HBO. Zbik is about as bad as it gets for entertainment. He's up there with Mora in being able to drag even exciting fighters into snoozefests. Chavez HAS to be on top of his game just to avoid a stinker, let alone raise his profile.
Been a fan since the beginning. A while back a realized he was not going to be a great fighter by any standard but Jr has a crowd pleasing style and I will continue to be a fan.
