Besides giving JC the opportunity to fight in MSG did the fight mean anything else to anyone ? RJJ is not exactly the force he once was and beating him will do little for JC's resume. It reminds me a bit of Norris beating SRL, ODH beating JCC and the likes of Berbick and Holmes beating Ali. Ok JC is miles above the likes of Berbick but you get the picture.
It means something, in the mind of a lot of Americans especially. I think people who follow the game quite closely realise Roy is quite simply not the fighter he was. But Joe shut him right out so without doubt his reputation will have gone up in the eyes of many of the more casual fans. The question marks over how good Joe was in his prime compared to RJJ, Hopkins etc will always remain.
I don't think it means anything at all. Jones clearly didn't come to win. He was happy to go the distance. You can tell by the way he was smiling and looking really satisfied at the end. The fight against Hopkins, even though controversial, is a much better win in my opinion. Hopkins was there to win, Roy wasn't.
Roy in his prime would have finished the job in round 1 when he had Calzaghe on his arse. The fight and result are meaningless at this stage of their careers.I just get the horrible feeling that this freak show is going to move to Wales for a re-match....they can have it
Solid. But in the minds of boxing fans it shouldn't be considered anymore important than Brewer or Mitchell.
Roy caught him with his forearm, a horrible blow to take. However its a real stretch to say he'd of finished him in the first. Joe gets little respect on esb.
Jones would have finished him in his prime- no doubt about it.... Don't know what the judges were watching really I had jones taking a couple of other rounds too. Still Calzaghe did more then enough. Round 7 in particular was one sided yet the judges gave it to joe... ?
I had the fight level after 7 rounds. That's when Roy got cut. I'm not saying he would have won but it probably didn't help matters. It's a bit ridiculous that the judges gave Calzaghe every round after the first.
The BBC had it to Jones at 6. It perhaps could have been scored either way up till then - in the second half Jones did zilch though, there was simply nothing left in the old mans tank.
It does add a little bit to his resume. In terms of my own ratings of his abilities, his best win was over Kessler, without a doubt.
It means his bank account looks even better now. It'll also **** off Warren even more, which is always funny. I'll still rank the Lacy and Kessler wins as more important than Hopkins or RJJ though.
Roy Jones wanted to go out on his shield like a warrior, and he did. For Joe Calzaghe the fight was a money fight........................................
It means I probably wont bother staying up for the rematch, in fact unless it's Froch in the other corner I probably wont bother with another fond farewell for the guy. Hang 'em up Joe.
