Yes or no? 66-13-1. 2-times WBC lightweight champion, 6-3-1 in the world title fights. Notable wins: Jorge Paez, Stevie Johnson, Joel Casamayor, Diego Corrales Notable losses: Javier Jauregi (twice), Floyd Mayweather (twice), Diego Corrales, Ricky Hatton
I don't think he will make it, but I have no problem with him getting in either. He tainted his career by screwing up several fights at the scales and that's probably enough to keep him out. On the other hand, he'd be close to a lock had he beaten Mayweather (I agreed with the decision).
Probably. He might have pushed Mayweather closer to defeat than any other fighter, which should count for something. He also gets credit for beating a quality fighter like Casamayor and some for beating Corrales, although he beat him when he was vastly over the weight limit. The indelible image of his career though is him being pummelled on the ropes by Corrales in their first fight. Weighing all that up, I'd say he just about merits a place.
Do you give it to him because of his great fight? and doing well with Mayweather? No.. A great fight means something, but he fought to the level of Corrales which was good but not great. Castillo and Corrales were good, but not great.
Most non boxing people I talk to about Gatti really only know about his bizarre murder. They really don't know his boxing career.
