Jumbo Cummings...."Joe Frazier" draw comes to mind. Mitch Green, Witherspoon, Snipes, & Bruno all losses. In 2002 Cummings was sentenced to life imprisonment for armed robbery. Adios Floyd.
Yes. He is crazy stupid even by boxing standards. He sued ESPN Classic for showing his fight with Frazier claiming they didn't have his permission!
Great recall of info.. "Train". That is why the Classic Blog always has some very interesting stuff in it.
Almost got himself a win over Bruno when he landed a booming right hand. Frank was completely gone on his feet, looked like he'd been hit on the head with a mallet. Unluckily for Jumbo it was right at the end of the round, and even then Bruno was on shaky legs for most of the next one, but he just managed to hang on until his head cleared and he went on to KO Jumbo.
This is obviously an indirect Joe Frazier post of some sort. Jumbo was at very best a fringe contender, but more so a journeyman. Big, strong, dangerous guy, but never came up with the big win. Frazier's draw with him only mildly affects Joe's legacy....Frazier had no business being in the ring by that point.
Of course that bout has no effect upon Fraziers standing. Goes without standing. Jumbo however was a nothing in his own time. A nobody who was never at any time on anyone's radar.
Requiem for a Heavyweight Part 2: In 2002 Jumbo went down for the beech -- a habitual criminal three-strikes conviction for stealing $250 and a VCR -- and for this he will spend the remainder of his life in prison. "Jumbo is less well remembered. In fact, he was treated more as a novelty than as a serious fighter, which was a shame. Joe Frazier came out of retirement in an attempt at a comeback, only to have Jumbo pound him around Chicago's old Amphitheater. Joe fr@pped up -- he underestimated a man who'd managed to keep himself alive in one of the nation's worst prisons for 12 years. If Floyd "Jumbo" Cummings was somewhat artless as a fighter, he did not lack for power. I saw this fight -- and more than once Jumbo rang his bell but good -- so good that they couldn't screw Jumbo completely -- they awarded him and Frazier a draw. In my book Jumbo beat him." http://www.artnet.com/magazineus/features/fitzpatrick/tony-fitzpatrick-jumbo-cummings9-15-10.asp
Didn't he bite Renaldo Snipes on the shoulder or neck when they fought? So he was the archetype for Mike Tyson, except for the being really good part.
He knocked Frank Bruno senseless in round 1, was interrupted by the bell, and was not competent enough to finish him in round 2. If he had landed that punch two seconds sooner he would have won by major upset.
Was n't even a legend in his own teabreak. Was a little unlucky with the scores in the Joe Frazier fight. A draw was being kind to Joe.
