Does Khan really deserve the respect he's getting?

This is a guy who has avoided anyone with a bit of power at welterweight. The same guy who avoided the fight the whole of Britain wanted to see, despite being offered a huge payday. The same guy who never avenged his previous losses. Some warrior ey?

Okay, he took on Canelo but he's been paid astronomical money to do so and it was win win for him which we've seen considering he was sparked in 6 but is getting huge praise.

Don't get me wrong, if Amir had cleared out the welterweight division and moved up to fight Canelo he'd get huge credit from me but the chap might has well have been retired since Garcia beat him, he's fought nobody. Alexander was already on the decline when Amir fought him.

So ease up on the praise here, Amir ain't no warrior, he's avoided guys for years. The Canelo fight was win win with a huge payday, any boxer at 147 or 154 would have took the Canelo fight for 6 million. Heck, I'd have taken it myself for 6 million and I haven't had a fight since I was on the playground.

He'll get my respect when he takes on guys like Brook and Thurman where his actual reputation is on the line and he isn't getting paid so much money. The chap hasn't done anything at welterweight and is living off his light welterweight win v Maidana, a fight he nearly got KO'd in.

Jumping two divisions to face big puncher. Yes he does. Everyone knows he was chasing Mayweather last couple years and who wouldn't he was the golden ticket. His name was floated out there as serious consideration for the figght and he didn't want to risk losing it. Can't blame him.

    Yes...

Remember the amount of hype when Floyd fought a 152 drained Canelo???

Meanwhile Khan deserves none for fighting a fully fledged Canelo? Hell yes he deserves respect.

The amount of disrespect Khan gets is crazy ....Steve Bunce pointed out an interesting fact on the boxing hour. Khan has fought 12 world champions in his career....At the moment UK has 11 current world champions and between them they have only faced 12 world champions combined.

so its food for thought when slagging him off he's faced more champions than all the UK world champions put together ....Yes he's been sparked but at least he's put himself on the line.

    No.

It was calculated, if Khan won it would have been a miracle, he would have been held up as some sort of God by his fans, if Khan lost didn't matter he was outweighed and moved up to much, it was almost a no lose situation for Khan and he got paid very well.

It was a big money fight, a money fight that meant he could avoid fighting Brook with nobody calling him on it because he was fighting Canelo, another bonus reason.

People seem to give Khan this strange praise about starting fast in fights, we had the same rubbish spoke when he was knocked out by Garcia "Khan DOMINATED Garcia until he was caught".

Yes he was in control of the first 6 minutes of potentially a 36 minute fight.

When Khan is involved there is this bizarre reasoning by some people, Khan starts fast, show's great handspeed and then slows, starts making mistakes and struggles.

If you want to give Khan credit for a calculated move then fine but I think it was a calculated move that seriously backfired if you look at the way it ended.

I didn't realize he was getting any amount of extraordinary respect and so he shouldn't. Since the bout was announced, it's been considered, by most people I've talked to, as a clear mismatch.

There's a fine line between bravery and stupidity and I see Khan's taking on of Canelo as the latter. I suppose it was a money-making need for Khan, after missing out on shots at either FMJ or Pac - and it was a painful end to the high-risk gauntlet he ran for that reward.

I don't buy into the "Khan was was doing well in the fight" chatter. I personally saw nothing in Khan's performance that seemed to be particularly effective against his bigger and better opponent. It was only a matter of time before Canelo caught up with him and when he did, Khan was brutally starched; not even an attempt to get up from the KD - he was plain stuck to the canvas.

Whilst he should get the respect any Boxer deserves for stepping in the ring, IMO, any glamorizing of what was, in effect, a decision to put his health in genuine danger, is not a useful message to be putting out there in pro boxing. He took a gamble and is lucky he survived it. I doubt he'll want to take another throw of the dice like that again, at any time in the remainder of his career.

What you need to understand here is a professional boxers 1st duty to himself is to make as much money as he can with the ability he has got. Boxing is a business. Boxers fight for money. Khan has now made around $40,000,000 which puts him in the top 20 all time earners in boxing. Mayweather became the highest earner in the history of all sports with a carefully orchestrated career which took the path of least resistance. I respect him for maximizing his earnings but not for the fact that he considers himself tbe. Khan says that he would like to become an atg but knows at this stage he is not. He deserves respect because he is pumping out lots of gold with his mediocre ability.

While it's true that he never avenged his losses for obvious reasons(not the deluded lies he has been spitting out), you have to be an imbecile to even suggest that fighting someone like Brook is more respect-worthy than moving up two weight divisions to fight Alvarez.

As far as the fights against opponents with no power at Welterweight is concerned, it was nothing new in Khan's career either. He got KO'd one division below so he continued playing the "I was drained" game and moved up facing carefully selected opponents to re-enhance his image among his idiotic followers. Anyone with any common knowledge of the sport whatsoever knew what was going on there but clapped away regardless because he's fun to watch.

Excellent post. Even though he can be a complete loon with comments out of the ring and even in the ring with his lies about wanting to avenge losses, he's always there to entertain. He gets no respect for it, which is sad, but still always attracts viewers. He could easily adopt the 99% defense tactic, but decided against it simply to please the public and give them a good show.

He might make comical and bitter comments, but the man definitely deserves respect.

I respect Khan for getting in the ring with Canelo but seeing that fight I'm now sure that Khan is bigger than Cotto. And people criticize Cotto

He earned some of the lost respect that I had for him; both in terms of his willingness concede a significant weight advantage and in how he performed.

It doesn't necessarily erase some of his off-putting past miscues such as his shameless courtship of an undeserving Mayweather fight, the shameful 1st round ko defeat to unheralded Breidis Prescot, and his selection of Paul Mccloskey over Bradley when Bradley called him out after beating Alexander.
