Does Larry Holmes deserve the bad rap for pummeling Muhammad Ali?

Can you tell us what "evil" he's
committed other humans haven't
done.

 

I like that in a person, as long as they're sane and correct in their out-loud thinking.

It doesn't suit some - either because they perceive such honesty as undiplomatic (and then illogically infer ignorance as the root cause) or they are just sensitive snowflake types - whom the truth hurts, daily.

Brutal honesty is it's own kind of charm, to those who can bear to listen.

Holmes exhibited this, in the run up to Ali, as far as I can recollect. He knew he was damned either way in that fight. Ali's presence within the sport had taken on a religious aura by then, with a mass of followers and disciples, rather than fans.

Interestingly, however, there were plenty in the media that knew this, along with how it needed to be a stoppage win, lest Holmes be relieved of his title, by way of the judges' decision.

In one sense, the event was a travesty. On the other, it was perhaps a fight that needed to happen, so as to push the door to on Ali's, by then, quite absurd career.

 

Other humans have committed it, but cheating on his wife and banging another man's girlfriend are both evil and I won't like him for it. He never did anything to make up for it, either.

REALLY!!!! So he didn't commit genocide like Hitler, Amin, Mao, or Stalin? He wasn't a serious killer like Bundy, Dahmer, and the many around the world for hundreds of years?

How about kill everthing in cities

In other words, theirs been far worse evil committed on this planet than cheating on a wife or banging someone's girlfriend ( I admit I did plenty of times in my teens through my early 30's, before I grew up) I'm sure you yourself have committed plenty of "sins".

I totally agree, Gerry Cooney's best wins were over two runaways from a local rest home, Ken Norton and Jimmy Young, not impressive. So his management protected him from more proven heavyweights who would have beaten the daylights out of him, Greg Page, Tim Witherspoon, and Pinklon Thomas. They were not old, so I guess Gerry was not interested. Jerry Quarry was a much better fighter than Cooney, he fought guys that were closer to his age with the exception of Eddie Machen in 1966, but Machen was a learning fight, Jerry lost that fight, it served as a learning experience. It was like Oscar Bonavena losing to the more experienced Zora Folley on points on Feb 26 1965, but in 1968 Oscar gained revenge by scoring a majority decision win.
