There is a debate going on about this in another thread. What do you guys think? This content is protected
Just one taker? Here is James Toney in the philly shell http://precisionstriking.com/wp-content/uploads/Toney-2w4p57zqvtftcmi6bdbz7u.jpg
Looks only somewhat similar to the Philly shell--he seems to mostly block/avoid punches by leaning forward with his head instead of by rolling his front shoulder. So my vote is "no."
He holds his left in a similar position to the Philly shell, but, crucially, doesn't use his left shoulder to roll the punches. He also holds his right hand lower than for example PBF, so it doesn't provide much cover to that side of the fence.
Very clearly not. The funny thing is, you could probably reach farther back and find someone who did, Lee Savold's simply not one of them. He looks quite pitiful here, really.
Doesn't matter if a clown is doing it. A philly shell is a philly shell its one of the most common stances. Even Wlad used it often against AJ
In the close up ringside angles you can see his upper body movement better https://streamable.com/8zpxs
And we've explained why what Lee Savold does in the ring isn't a Philly shell. PS- Can't check out your streamable now but there are numerous moments in the video where he clearly leans forward rather than shoulder rolling, while also keeping his right low. This is not the Philly shell.
Good question. I'm still trying to figure out what exactly he thinks the Philly shell approach consists of, and why he thinks Savold is a good example of it.
I don't know what a philly shell is so he could probably tell me anything ! They didn't have philly shell in my day. I'm hoping it's some sort of pasta. I like pasta.
This reminds me of the Checkhook debate. Apparently Mayweather is the only fighter in history to throw it...in the Hatton fight. yes, Savold was crafty and used what could be described as the Philly Shell. That doesn't mean he was as great as Mayweather or Toney, but he used a similar defense, and against the still learning Rocky, it helped him stay on his feet and avoid getting dropped or knocked out. He got beat up and retired in his corner though.
