Does Lennox Lewis not fighting Bowe the second best HW from his era ruin his legacy?

Discussion in 'World Boxing Forum' started by Ryan O'Reilly, Dec 14, 2011.

  1. It seems shocking that these two were able to duck each other throughout their career. For me and most this has to be looked at as one of the worst things to ever happen to the sport where the long standing number 1 and number 2 fighters refused to face off.

Clearly both of these two giants were much better than the blown up cruiser (With steroids of course) Holyfield and the tiny Mike Tyson who never stood a chance against such a beast like Lewis or Bowe. "A great big man always beats a great small man."

Why didn't Lewis go out of his way to make sure the Bowe fight happened? He needed that fight for legacy badly. He should have pushed the boat out to make sure of that super fight. Lewis had enough money anyway, he robbed the boxing public of that fight. He should have been prepared to give Bowe a decent % of the split to sign the contract, Lewis clearly wasn't prepared to do that, I wonder why.

Then you also have to seriously wonder why Lewis also shamelessly ducked other proven World class opponents from his era like Ruiz, Byrd and Waldo. These are questions that Lewis has to answer for, for the good of the sport.

Bowe through is belt in the sewer rather than face Lewis after he was on the wrong end of a post-fight tongue-lashing from Lennox, widely regarded as one of the most vicious incidents of trash-talking in boxing.

No bowe got beat by a polish glass chinned bouncer...

    What did hurt his legacy?

I think that getting outboxed for 6rds by a green vitali and then getting chased into retirement did though.

  5. Yeah I know, Bowe got rid of his belt cause Lewis wasn't prepared to give him a decent % of the split. This is what the threads about.

Bowe's window to beat LL was short. Holyfield I and Golota I had some 30 months between.

edit: that's from second Holy fight..

Didnt Bowe offer Lewis a 90/10 split?

Then when it was madated Bowe threw the WBC belt in the bin.

Lewis still goes down as one of the ATG heavyweights, but beating Bowe would have been a great name on his resume.

    Pity they never fought

Considering that fight could of propelled Bowe to being that era's best fighter, Yes it put a stain on his legacy, the same way Lewis ducking a Vitali rematch put a stain on his

What are you talking about? Bowe publicly binned his belt rather than fight Lewis. That's better than any win :patsch
