does making a loud sound on the heavy bag mean that your slapping you're punches?

through the years of wailing on the heavy bag, my punches are making a slightly lauder sound, but i dont know if its because my punches are a little more solid then they where when started or because maybe im hitting with a wider surface area (maybe a slap).

when using the heavy bag, should you look for a lauder sound as you progress?

I judge by how much the bag jumps up with straight punches and the dent left from hooks/uppercuts because the bag will just swing if you push your punches. But if your hooks are high pitched Id say your slapping but with straight punches thats what you want.

its not that my punches are heavy, just the sound is becoming a little different. i will look into the bag swing.

A nice 'snapping' sound usually indicates that you have your range spot on and that you are snapping your punches. If you here more of a dull 'thud' and the bag swings around all over the place, you a pushing you punches instead of snapping them.

Idk, could mean nothing. Because sometimes when you dent into the bag and you hit that spot again it'll make a loud sound. You'll know that your punches are solid when you hit the bag, can't describe the feeling, but trust me you'll know.

Yeah, I konw what you mean. But different bags make different thuding noises so it's no good asking this online really.

the more you can bend the bag, the better
if you can bend it AND swing it too, then your a world class power puncher

A swinging bag doesn't necessarily mean that you are hitting it crisply. I recall a couple of summers ago, one of my fighters, a polish middleweight, top 5 amateur in the uk at the time come up to the gym one night, and he brought a couple of his polish mates with him. One of them was huge, only short but this guy was built like a tank. We let him loose on the bags, he was grunting away, smacking it all over the place. In between rounds he was being really obnoxious to some of the younger lads. He was bigging himself up, giving everyone the big 'I am', saying how he hits so much harder than everyone there. I didn't like his attitude, so I offered him the chance to spar against one of my fighters, Lee. Lee was only 17, and a middleweight so he was giving up some serious size to this guy. Anyway, I got them ready, Lee was shitting himself at the size of the guy, and his so called power as he'd been watching this guy knock the bag all over the place. I knew this guy didn't hit as hard as it appeared though, and I knew Lee was far to good for him. The end result was that the polish guy didn't even last a round. It was a great lesson for Lee, since then he has become a much more confident fighter, and it was a good lesson for the whole group, insamuch as they seen that everything isn't always as it first seems.

Although the way a bag moves 'can' indicate a good puncher, a swinging bag can also mask a lot of flaws in someone's punching.
