Good question. Marquez looks like the better technician (at least the more "classic" boxer), every punches he throws look perfect. But Pacquiao quickness and footwork allow him to beat more decisively a greater number of styles. Marquez looks terrific against slowfooted and come forward fighter, but he can be in trouble facing outboxers. For example, I'm far from saying he would lose to Algieri, but I doubt he would win in such dominant fashion than Pacquiao did. That said, Pacquiao didn't face many great counter-punchers such as Marquez in his career, and we all know what happened.
You could say that I guess, they both like to brawl but I think Marquez is a better boxer from a technical stand point. He is a better counter puncher and I think he has a better defense to. I think he had the most success when he was boxing Manny, luring him in, countering and turning him, kind of like Morales did in their first fight. The last fight was more of brawl of course, but before that monsteruos punch Manny looked like he was taking over.
Excellnt post:good...this is true, and it suggests what would have happened if Pac had met another great, even better counter puncher like Jose Napoles. As a Pac fan, I cringe at that thought.
Pacman even at this stage, is too busy for Mayweather. That constantly pumping and looping right hand and combinations are going to have him in retreat mode. And unlike Maidana, Pac won't fizzle out, he has two gears, and can conserve himself better. Mayweather isn't going to exchange and take the punishment Marquez was willing to take to land those right hand counters with consistency. May is going to land some good shots, but I think Pac edges a close fight.
All I have to say about this fight is that I hope Pac beats his ass.....otherwise, I'm probably the only boxing fan here that really doesn't give a **** about it. It should have taken place back in 2010.
I hope you are right , both have declined somewhat, my head says Mayweather , but I'd like my heart to get this one right!
We agree. But here's what I may differ. I think Mayweather is very under rated by modern historians and writers due to his problems outside the ring and attitude with the press. If Mayweather does a paint job on Pacquaio, what can his critics say? They will have to give him some credit. I think Mayweather is trouble for many all time great at welter, outside of say Tommy Hearns. Many disagree. Yeah, Marquez does have a better skill set, but not better power. I think Roach is playing games ( bad calf issues) and secretly focusing on Manny's stamina / punch out put which is the key for him in this fight.
I don't know if some of you came across that youtube channel : https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEvnk5m_Zs-RpCc2YbFDewA Obviously the guy is a Mayweather fan, but there are some interesting points.
He has a deeper, more refined textbook skillset. Pac is mainly a physical talent with some great dominating basic tools...ie footspeed, straight-left, power, ability to move through the weights and not fall apart physically(roids and weightcutting helping). He's superior to Marquez in those respects, but inferior in the textbook region and the mix makes for well-balanced competitive fights for the most part. Marquez is certainly the more skilled fighter as most of us would apply the term.If he was as quick and heavy handed as Manny, he would beat him clearly almost every time.
