Well Top 10/20 lists are always going to fluctuate over time. I guess it wouldn't be any fun if it didn't but the more and more I read about the old timers and watch modern and classic film I get better perspective.

Norton's win against Ali is greater than any of Tyson's individual wins but his resume seriously lacks depth.

    Norton:
    Ali
    Young
    Quarry
    Stander
    Bobick
    Kirkman
    Cobb
    Clark

    Tyson:
    Holmes
    Spinks
    Ruddock 2x
    Tucker
    Thomas
    Tubbs
    Berbick
    Bruno 2x
    Botha
    Biggs
    Smith
    C. Williams
    Seldon

To maintain the integrity of the thread I kept Norton's list pretty short so that I don't undermine what should pass for a contender. Add to the fact that Norton never really won his title in the ring nor did he ever clear out the division it becomes incredibly difficult for me to rate him above Mike Tyson who won, unified and cleaned out his division.

To be fair Foreman never really cleared out the division in either of his reigns. For a man of 81 fights coming up with his top 20 names on his win column seems like an harder task than on surface. I don't think he did enough in his first career to get on the top 10 list the first time around the only reason I think he's top 10 is because winning the Heavyweight Championship 20 years after he first lost it is a feat worthy of the highest praise.

The trouble with Vitaly is that his abilities far exceed his legacy. The 4 year layoff cost him dearly and effectively gave the reigns to his brother who will undoubtedly go down in history as the greater fighter. At no point in Vitaly's career can he call himself undisputed; as there is always someone who can make a claim to the title.

I personally don't have Liston in my 10 but a strong case can be made for putting him there.

    Nice post :good
I'd multiple quote if it wasn't for my iPad but I'll do my best

I think with Tyson I've been slightly swayed by the majority of his fans being douchebags on ESB however your quite the opposite. Most make 1000s of excuses for everything that went wrong in his career. It's a real What if career in my eyes as the whole Rooney situation and not being in his prime for Douglas. you have slightly swayed my mind on Tyson and I don't think I realised quite how many solid wins he did have throughout his career, which is pretty foolish of me as I've seen the majority of fights. Had he had one defining win, say Bowe in 92 he'd probably rise up to at least 9th on my list and maybe higher.

For Foreman I just feel it was so incredible what he did, and the Moorer win is underrated for my eyes. I think Moorer's chin was more of an RJJ style chin in the sense that once it cracked it had pretty much gone however up until Foreman no one had properly tested it. He has ATG wins over Frazier which IMO Foreman-Frazier I is the best heavyweight win of all time due to the brutality and ease that foreman won with that just edges out FOTC and Rumble in the jungle. It's the little things that we each have our different opinions on will always add up too make our lists different.

vitali will always be better than wlad in my eyes. He lost to an ATG in Lewis who although past prime was still undisputed champion. Other than he's never really struggled in a fight apart from that. The shoulder injury in the Byrd fight is a valid excuse in my eyes. He has solid wins and all were dominate as well.

And yer Liston certainly has a case for the 10th spot and I think most have him 10-15 anything higher or lower I think is a little unjust though.

its a close call but i wouldn't include him, at least not without detailed analysis and thought

    my list reads:

    1.Ali
    2.Lewis
    3.Louis
    4.Foreman
    5.Marciano
    6.Holmes
    7.holyfield
    8.frazier
    9.johnson
    10.Wlad

no.10 is where it gets controversial but really in the last 7 years klitschko's dominance has rivaled that of even prime tyson and he has faced near enough if not even competition and is the tougher stylistic matchup h2h in my opinion.

but still i wouldn't argue with someone including dempsey or tyson ahead of him

Tyson came up in a very weak division and cleared it out with such ferocity that he became the biggest phenomenon in boxing history. His popularity made Ali seem small time.
In the few years during his rise to champion, reign as champion, and stunning upset loss to Douglas, Tyson was one of the 5 best HW's to ever step in a ring.
His run as an elite champion was unfortunately short lived, but he shined brighter in that short time than any fighter in any weight class has ever done.
Those of us that witnessed his years of dominance know that there can never be a discussion of ATG HW's without Tyson's name being included in the list of the very best.

I'm glad to see much Louis praise, in my opinion he is the best HW of all time!

    Louis
    Marciano
    Ali
    Dempsey
    Johnson

I composed 5 because I don't care for much else, Primo Carnera would have KO'd tyson just like McBride did.

History looks at facts, not opinions. Fact is he was the youngest heavy champ, and he had great skill and a malicious punch, and his mental block will curse him forever. He is not great, and could not manage to stay in check and rebound like the great ones have.
