This vid explains how sometime MMA fighting skills will not help in a street fight, I`ve been attacked by guys that could probably beat a lot of MMA fighters because they attacked first, if you`re not ready for an attack it doesn`t matter if you`re a more skilled fighter you still suffer an instant broken jaw from a bare knuckle shot, so how effective would most MMA fighters be in a street fight on average?

I agree that MMA won't save you from getting shot or getting your throat slit from behind.

MMA is not superior to carrying a gun yourself or having numerous tough buddies to watch your back.

For everything else though, it's basically a synthesis of all the most effective hand to hand martial arts, and you're not going to do better.

Effective self defence is more about reading situations and defusing potentially violent encounters, then having the sense to run the hell away if it all kicks off.

In terms of effective martial arts I'd pick any of the ones that teach you to end a fight quickly: boxing, MT, Kyokushin. It's good to know grappling, but the last thing you want to be doing in a bar room environment is rolling around on the floor trying to pass guard and slap an arm bar on someone.

Ever seen a wrestler pick someone up, turn them upside down, and then slam them head first into the pavement?
    Scary ****.
Funny **** is the bouncer then just 1 shotting the wrestler
The bouncer was fine with them fighting it out, but as soon as he saw that he said: "hell naw!" and let his hand fly.

Bartending is a **** job, but it has it´s moments.

MMA is still a sport. However there are actual martial arts that are perfect for deescalating encounters on the street.
Street fights rarely end up 1v1 anyways.

Oh, and one thing I want to make clear! Never try to end an actual street fight. You can easily hurt someone and thus **** up your own life, even if you were just defending yourself.

    No, not at all.

Punching isn't always a failsafe to knock someone down.

You can smother a striker with wrestling and take them down.

    Definitely not.

I'd probably be able to take down an average bloke and choke him unconscious or break his arm.

I mean yeah if I get cold clocked and hit my head hard, I might never wake up.

But failing that, I would fancy myself to take someone's back and if they aren't used to defending that I'm almost certainly going to do some serious damage.

Plus as well as being able to sink a choke hold or kimura, I can still hit someone with a baseball bat or stab them with a knife, it's just that I have more options for me.

Most people fight on instinct, and i can still do that, I just have training to back it up with.

I disagree, mma training prepares you for all scenarios, its a lot of clinch work, ground and standup, mma training also puts you in better conditioning than most solo styles. a mma trained person three years in could submit a decent wrestler, leg kick and wrestle a decent boxer and jiujitsu a tall big man. they have more tools to fall back on

MMA & Boxing is useless for self defence

The best method of self defence is kung-fu & the telegraphed right hand punch, looped as wide as possible. I studied the art of wing chunian black belt karate from the age of 12 and let me tell you I could end a mans life with the flick of a wrist. I don't care if you're 6'4" 250 pounds, my 5'4" 120 pound frame can generate more than enough force to end fights in the blink of an eye. Bruce Lee was the same as me.
