Most people think Wilfredo Gomez was the best 122 lber in history & his record certainly does nothing to dispute that.

Ive only seen a handfull of Gomez fights & need to see more but from what Ive seen, I think there could be a guy who fought at 122 who may have the tools to pull it off.... that man is Erik `El Terrible` Morales.

The reasons I think Erik could do it is.....

    1. You need to have a chin made of cast iron to even survive vs Gomez.
    2. You must be a good technical boxer.
    3. You have to be capable of going to war in spells as Gomez will catch you & make you trade every now & then.
    4. You must have great lateral movement & footwork.

Morales best qualities were exactly as mentioned above but this fight can go 1 or 2 ways depending on how Morales feels....

If Morales comes in relying too much on his chin & tries to go to war then Id favour Gomez, if any 122 lber can KO Erik then it certainly is Gomez.... but.... if Erik uses his footwork, jab & straight right hand often then I see him winning a close 12 rd verdict.

EM had very good power at 122, Gomez had great power but as long as Erik keeps it as a boxing match for most of the bout then i think he can take the odd Gomez bomb en route to a typical classic peak Morales win.

Morales himself was 1 of the best ever at 122 & that was his best weight before all the wars wore him down, the man`s stamina was terrific too as the McCullouch & MAB fights showed (most think he was struggling to make weight in those 2 wars aswell) so despite Gomez excellent KO record, I dont think he KO`s Morales & as long as EM boxes more than he fights, then I think he takes this on pts.

I keep thinking of Gomez attempt at 126 (I know it was v Sanchez, 1 of the best 126 lbers ever) which never went well where as Morales made it all the way to 130 with his ability, all the way becoming less of a fighter than he was at 122 but still good enough to be rated No1 at one point at 126 & 130. That must count for something, especially when his prime was at 122 - where he & Gomez would fight.

I know Im probably in the minority here but......

    MORALES W12 GOMEZ

    :thumbsup

No, i think the vast difference in defensive ability would swing things Gomez way.

He's the better technician as well as the harder puncher.Morales main advantage is probably chin.

Morales has a chance against anyone that ever fought at 122.

I think Morales would give him a great fight but I don't see him beating Gomez.

I agree with this comment. In addition, because of the great KO percentage, I think Gomez's boxing ability is underrated. He was a great boxer too. Sure, Sanchez put on a clinic against him, but he kind of wrecked Gomez in the first round and Gomez's legs were shaky the whole fight. I said Gomez by decision unless Morales wants to get crazy in which case I'd say late stoppage for Gomez.

Morales is naturally bigger than Gomez, has the better chin, and is a skilled boxer himself with very good power at 122lbs. I'd favor Gomez, who was both a better boxer and puncher than Morales, over anyone at 122lbs, but Morales would probably have the best chance of defeating him. If it goes 15 rounds instead of 12, Gomez probably stops Morales very late. Above 122lbs, the weight fit Morales more, and he could very well win at 126lbs, and I would favor him at 130lbs.

Cheers for your replies guys, it looks as if Im gonna have to see more of Gomez as I had the feeling that EM had the advantage in technical boxing skills but it sounds as if Im wrong there & Morales is really a terrific boxer (although some fans dont realise because they like to remember his war type fights rather than his technical ones) so Gomez must have been special.

I constantly hear that Gomez was the king at 122 so I thought Id put him in their with a guy who I know a very lot about & a man I view as the best 122 lber of my time.

If only we had a time machine eh ?

..............Morales may have been the better overall fighter (extremely debatable I know), and I too give him the best shot of anyone to pull off the upset.

It depends how Gomez wants to go about it. If he slides and moves and picks his spots like he did against Zarate, I can't see Morales being able to keep up. Erik was more wooden and mechanical looking, and not as fast.

If Gomez wants to get bullheaded and wants to trade (as he was increasingly prone to do later in his reign), then it obviously gives Morales a better chance.

I still pick Gomez, but his KO streak would have ended. Morales survives to the bell despite a few hairy moments.

Very. Morales was never a great boxer, though he was a very good fighter/boxer combination at times.

Not sure if you are aware of this but... At the time of the Sanchez fight Gomez' record was 36-0-36 Knockouts. If that gives you any indication of how great he was...

Yeah, I knew he was undefeated at 122 & won all by KO (I thought he was 32-0 but wasnt sure) thats the main reason I put Morales in their as both he & wayne McCullouch had the best chins in the lighter weights at that time, difference being that El Terrible was a far superior fighter, it would be a waste of time putting McCullouch in there, at least Morales is a legendary fighter & is not known JUST for his iron chin.

I must see more of Gomez because I rate Erik Morales ever so highly, epecially at 122 before all the classic wars kicked in.
