Does Pac possess the required ring intelligence?

Obviously this question is in reference to his impending super fight with Floyd Mayweather. Over the course of his past 4 fights, we know that Pac does well in the following departments, well enough to give Floyd things to think about:

    - Stamina
    - Speed
    - Power
    - Combination punching/work rate

However as far as my understanding goes, there is one extra dimension which he’s yet to show his quality in. That’s the ability to tactically cut off the ring, and apply pressure to slick movers. I could of course be wrong, in which case I'd appreciate it if someone post a fight in which he’s executed this skill effectively?

I ask this question, simply because I don’t feel Pac has the ability to emulate Castillo in his first bout against Floyd. Looking back at the Cotto fight, and when Cotto got on his bike and ran, Pac seemed frustrated by being forced to chase him. Now if a wounded Cotto can manage to effectively dance and move away from Pac’s attacks, (and lower Pac’s punch output/success rate in the process), imagine what a fresh Mayweather will do?

Apartment from his occasional careless defence, I really see this particular aspect of Pac’s game making him fall short. I can envisage Mayweather right now in my head, smirking at Pac’s attempts in catching him, whilst tattooing his face with jabs, straight right hands, and the occasional left hook.

What do you fellas think? Does Pac have the tools to implement this tactic? Or will his gameplan not even involve this strategy?

Pac has been picking his spots as of late... and coming in at angles.. as we saw in the Cotto fight. Mayweather is WITHOUT QUESTION going to eat a good amount of punches from Manny. If Pac can handle the straight right of Floyd as well as he handled Cottos shots... the fight is over. I feel that mayweather will not be able to operate under his usually masterful game plan as he eats serious punches a few times each round... he will be ground down and beaten over twelve rounds in a UD loss.

    Short answer, NO.

Freddie Roach IS Pacquiao's ring intelligence.

Pacquiao's ring intelligence will be tested when Mayweather figures him out and adapts to stop his gameplan, I'm not sure Pacquiao has the boxing brain to figure out Mayweather mid fight.

Pac doesn't cut off the ring well, that's true. However, Floyd isn't quite the ring general he's made out to be, either. He does well because he works so well out of a defensive shell, but he's quite easy to back up in straight lines and put against the ropes simply because he doesn't mind it. That could and should be an issue against Pac. If this were the young Floyd that took apart Corrales utilizing great ring control I'd have no issues whatsoever with picking him, but these days my confidence in Floyd is waning. He just hasn't shown the ability to keep up a gameplan like that in a while. I see this fight as more or less 50/50 these days.

He looked brilliant against Hatton, de la Hoya, Diaz, but, he has been banged up a lot more as he has moved up. His last 2 fights he has received more punishment than usual. Probaly the move up in weight has decreased his lateral movement. If Cotto, and Clottey can fug him up a little bit, Floyd will outbox him easily.

In the fights with Cotto and Clottey, a large bulk of the shots he was recieving with 'permitted' shots. In that he purposefully stood still and allowed them to land their combinations, in the hope of prompting an exchange with them.

If he wanted to, I'm pretty sure he could have repeated the elusiveness he displayed against Oscar

Edit: please note, I'm not suggesting he's a defensive master or anything of the sort. Just merely pointing out that his defence in those two fights were a little misleading

No he doesnt. Floyd will box and move. I see Pac getting frustrated, and the more he does that I see Floyd just continue to pot shot and move all the way to a UD.
Its 1 thing to have great boxing skills, but if you dont have the mental fortitude to stick with something and change and adapt to what your opponent is doing. Especially Floyd @ that, you're going to lose. Boxing is not only a hit and not be hit game, its a thinking man game. Only few fighters are able to adjust mid fight and use their skills to get the job done.
I dont see Pac as that fighter. He has qualities that can trouble Floyd as the OP stated, but in the end I just dont think thats enough. And the skills Pac has I wouldnt even call it an advantage, b/c its not like Floyd doesnt have speed and stamina either. They merely help Pac b somewat competitive.

Pac has been improving his overall skills and movement over the years with Roach and team, but we will have to wait and see. A Pac-FMJ fight can go many ways.
