Similar to how a good pitcher can deliver the ball and you only get a read on it when it's too late? The reason why I ask is Pacquiao seems to repeat a lot of the same movements and combos but he is able to land the left straight at a very good percentage. You would think fighters would know what to expect yet they can't seem to stay away from the 1 - 2 very well. Does this mean most fighters would have trouble timing him like Marquez, and just because Marquez knocked him out would others be able to?
Pac is quick and it is hard to dodge a 1-2 if you are willing to engage. Marquez is exceptional, so he is able to time Pac. But even he takes one to land one.
He has incredibly quick hands, very good footwork which lets him get into range quickly, get lead foot superiority, and his front foot is pointed almost straight forward, which means he is slightly squared up and it's easier and quicker to turn his body into a punch, he also has good upperbody movement
marquez has the only BAAALLS to engage pacquiao on a firefight. unlike cotto, dlh, clot****ingtey, mosley and timmeh "the wall lol" bradley. had margo had good timing, his heart would have come to fruition and could have kod pac too.
IF Roach knew Spanish or had Ariza translate Golpe a Golpe for him #Team Pac would have already known that JMM had PAC's feint figured & timed. (He even showed exactly what he was going to do step by step)
no need. pac even showed jmm pre-3rd fight how to negate jmm's right, but pac was too lazy to remember it on the actual fight.
I'd say so. Like others have said, his feints and lateral steps set it up a variety of ways. And like Floyd says, it looks different once you're on the inside. Everybody knows Floyd likes to bait the jab to set up a pull-counter, or that Oscar has a lethal left hook he finishes up his combinations with, or that Cotto often initiates his offense off of a heavy jab. Those shots still land on everybody. Yeah, even before the 3rd fight. Manny mixed up his feints well and had success, but shooting in from too far out of range was something Marquez had long been prepared for. I think it's also worth it to point out Manny seems to hold his hands up better and feint better when he fights a taller opponent. It's less obvious whether he's going to duck down and shoot upwards, or go to the body. Against Marquez or Bradley, it's a big easier to see what he's doing in some respects. As the aggressor he's simply at a disadvantage against a fighter who can turn him. By the time he's committed to throwing, Marquez gets that split-second extra of warning to turn away from the left hand.
What's largely neglected in a conversation like this is not Pac's hand speed but his foot feint with his right foot that freezes his opponent for an instant to get home with his straight left down the pipe. It's like playing against a great QB who freezes a linebacker with a fake long enough for a running back to break away for a TD.
That was kinda the point, that it seems obvious that when Pacquiao throws a jab and has his left hand cocked, it is usually coming next. Still most guys are eating straights all night.
Good point. Tim, Shane, and later on in the fight Miguel were moving away trying to avoid the punch altogether whereas Marquez was looking to stand in the line of fire. I really don't see other fighters at 147 being able to trouble Pacquiao's chin, it's hard to throw with that much conviction like Marquez did when you are still trying to figure a guys movement out.
He feints well, and has fast hands and feet. Not many of his recent opponents had the timing, accuracy and gameplan to sit and counter that punch like Marquez did. Marquez had also been in with Pac numerous times to know what to expect, while his other opponents were feeling his speed and power for the first time... Harder to adjust to it in the actual ring, than to watch on tape and plan on dealing with it.
It's the feints, and the suddenness that the punch comes out. It's easy to think you'd avoid it but inside the ring fighters are pumped full of adrenaline and anxiety. They freeze up. Pac also leads with the left, and he shoots it straight out like a jab. It's hard to avoid that . Marquez eats those all the time and he knows Pac pretty well.
Nobody, including a defensive genius like Floyd will go into a fight with Pac and end up not getting hit. You are going to get touched; the key is to limit damage which you can by ducking under his straight left as seen numerous times by JMM. Pac does not adjust. You can nullify his head feints by going to the body. This will cause him to revert back to his normal routine of jab-straight left, jab-straight left..hoping one of those lefts will knock you out. This is the perfect opportunity to time him and really do damage. I'm no expert but this is what I saw which worked so well for Marquez.
