Does Pacquiao need to beat a slick, African-American fighter to prove he is the best?

Ever since the controversial remarks made by Bernard 'B HOP' Hopkins, new light has been made that throughout his illustrious and unprecedented career, Manny 'Pac Man' Pacquiao has not fought a slick, African-American boxer. Points have been made that in the lower weight divsions, Asian and Latin American fighters dominate the sport and there is a dearth of African-American fighters south of the super-featherweight and lightweight divisions. Pacquiao has had a long journey from his career start at a 106 pounds and has moved 40 pounds to contest in the welterweight and junior middleweight divisions. For all that is worth, he has faced multiple tumultuous challenges at each weight level. Now, at this point of his career, he has beaten beasts, compared to his size. Does he have anything left to prove at this point? Should he fight an African-America fighter to prove that he can overcome even the most unfavorable stylistic matchups, as posed by many boxing experts today? Or should he entertain a third and final fight in a triology with Juan Manuel Marquez? Or should we all just say, that he has nothing left to prove and that he does not need Floyd Mayweather as a part of his lasting legacy?

Vote and comment in the poll.

Naa the colour doesnt make a difference he just needs to fight PBF to prove he is the best of this generation.

The fact is I think people are getting abit sick of the double standards with Pac, Im a fan of his but Im also a fan of PBF, Mosely, Marquez and I know they get called out on alot of things that Manny doesn't.

Let him take the test if he beats PBF then he is the best but fighting people like Clottey, Margo dont do nothing to enhance his carear in my mind.

Even the fight he had with Oscar didnt do much for me as I thought from the very beginning it was at such a low weight for Oscar one that he hadnt been at for years & he had been beaten by PBF, but he still won and thats all that matters.

I'm just not goin crazy over the last few in house fights when I think he could be fighting better opposition!

Emeritus, you bring up some great points. Should it suffice to say that I follow up question to your thoughts: why do you think Pacquiao gets this double standard? What allows Pacman to get away with or not called out on the same things such as PBF get called out for? And what are those things? I know catchweight is one, but I just wanted to hear further thoughts from you or anyone else on the matter.

    Bad poll options.

Floyd and Pacquiao at this stage need each other equally in the sense that you can't say either of their names without the other being brought up. It's that simple.

Edit: They both will go down as all-time legends and have already proven everything with regards to that, but there's still a big empty hole in the discussion about them and always will be unless they fight.

Pacquiao has nothing left to prove. Everyone wants to see him fight Floyd Mayweather, and it would be a massive shame if the fight never came off, but he's already proved he is the best. He's the best fighter of his generation. It's not even really a discussion as far as I'm concerned. What more does the little ******* have to do?

    Marnoff,

I understand that you are among other who want to see the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight. However, you are missing the point of the thread. The question asked if Pacquiao needs to fight An African-American Boxer with a Slick Style? This means any fighter, not just Floyd. I hope this clears up your concern about the poll options.

I could have easily made a thread of Pacquiao vs. Mayweather and what that means. But here, I am referring to Bernard Hopkin's opinion of Pacquiao's resume and the dearth of African-American fighters on the ledger.

    Thanks for your thought though.

I would say he needs to fight Floyd. The other fights could be interesing, and if he keeps fighting, Floyd or no Floyd, he should take those fights (Bradley/Alexander winner, Berto, etc.)

But his lower weight class accomplishments alone prove he is a great fighter.

We all know Pac is great, but is he THE greatest? Some people are calling him the greatest of all time? In my mind the greatest of all time are S.R.R and Ali. I can't even call him the greatest of this generation yet!

Can you really put Pac in that kind of league? Has he ever fought someone as great as Fraiser? Has he been a massive underdog like Ali was against Foreman?

You know people were calling PBF a coward for not fighting Shane or Margo, but no one is calling Pac man a coward when Shane offered to drain down to 143? and he wouldn't take the fight!

Ariza is calling Shane a quitter because he got dominated by Floyd & I hear fans parrotting it, how can Shane be a quiter when he has never been stopped?!

What about the fact Pac won't even entertain Marquez which he had two great fights that were razor tight! People always bring up May Castillo but at least PBF gave him a rematch straight away and beat him more convincingly than the first time, Pac didnt do that, isn't he ducking Marquez? Oh no he isnt cos he's a much better fighter now right? OK Manny prove it! Beat him convincly this time please!

My point is Pac is great, one of the greatest BUT just like every other fighter he has flaws. If you speak to Manny fans they can't see it cos they are Manny fans and not boxing fans. I think he gets away with it because people view him as a good guy, they can identify with him, He's an icon to his people I understand that but Ali was an icon to blacks doesn't mean I can't think how he didnt do well against Norton, doesn't mean I cant critisize him for being a ******* to fraizer after he sent him money!

As fans we have a right to be objective that way our favourite fighters will be forced to fight some of the fights we like more often imo!

You swear like your and my opinon matter anyway LOL. Just because you think he's not the gratest of this generation you think people give a F. PAC is rated according to what all the boxing writers rate him and so far he's the greatest of this generation. Some are rating him side by side with SRR and Ali.

I voted for the first option NOT because he needs to fight a "slick, black fighter", but because he needs to fight Mayweather. Prove he is a clean athlete or forever be linked with fellow greats like Barry Bonds...

Pac need to beat a full random blood and urine up until the fight test to be the greatest. He has shown he only fights brawlers/stalkers on the decline. He is a joke to everyone except for *******s and people trying to sell the popularity of Boxing. That is fine, but call a spade a spade.

there is only one person in boxing who can beat pacquiao at welter, and it's mayweather. a slick boxer is a stylistic mismatch for pacquiao, but pac has the talent to win despite it. only mayweather possesses the style and talent to beat pacquiao.

LOL but our opinions should matter we are the fans infact our opinions should matter the most! Not writing or journalists who are biased or have an agenda?

My thing is he isnt the greatest of this generation therefore he doesnt even deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as those guys.....not yet anyway!

People forget RJJ looked like super man a few years ago, he even went up to heavy and conceded 40 pounds to Ruiz and basically schooled him!

Not to mention that people curse Floyd out for fight Marquez and being two pounds out but when anyway says why did they make cotto weigh in at 145 for 147 belt everyone is like two pounds dont matter! Correction 2 pounds dont matter if your Manny pacquiao!

Didnt we have a thread where someone was saying that Mayweather wanted to fight Berto and that was a ***** move and who is Mannys next opponent? Oh right Shane who is basically coming off the worse beating of his life bar the Forest fight or Berto!

    It just makes me laugh!
