I see that Paul Williams doesnt seem to use his Jab as much as he should and that begings to bother me seeing that hes going to fight a fighter in Pavlik who uses his jab on the regular with force. Does Paul have to get his Jab more perfected to beat Pavlik or Cab he do what hes always been doing fighting the smaller fighters????? Your Thoughts
No he needs to get Bernard to fight Pavlik to win this fight jk I am have not made a pick on this one yet
Activity and movement, that's what he needs, especially movement. If he keeps moving while still throwing WITHOUT standing still to exchange Pavlik won't win a single round. Pavlik can't fight when his opponent constantly moves since he needs to set his self to throw major punches and if he doesn't throw his big punches he has nothing.
I wonder if Paul can compete on the outside or does he have to be on the inside the whole night. Maybe the Angles Paul gives him is going to drive him insane but if he gets caught will it be lightsout????
Pavlik's jab is flying quickly with power, so it might not be a great idea to stand in there and jab with the jabber, but that doesn't mean Williams shouldn't use the jab as he moves, pretty much the way Calzaghe did vs. Kessler. What PW needs is quick side to side movement, slipping the jab if he's trapped, move away from KP's right all night and throw punches from different angles. This worked great vs. jab maestro Winky, but Pavlik packs a punch 10 times bigger, so it has to be a defensively very sound performance. That's the only way, but if PDub finds the rhythm and movement to throw KP off his game, which is damn hard to do, the rest will be easy.
i agree with ya about the movement...but in addition to movement, there was also about 180lbs of the best lhw in the world hitting him the only time he lost. paul does throw on the move but nothing that should bother pav much b/c nothing paul throws on the move will be hard stop pav from just walking him down.. at least i would think. plus, when paul likes to make a point he will set himself, stand there and throw bunches. this will give pav his opportunity to set himself. we'll see tho i guess. of course if i'm right and nothing paul throws will give pav pause about moving forward he should be able to walk paul down and not give him anyplace to move.
I am a huge fan of both fighters. This is an interesting match-up. I think Williams is not an outside fighter and he does not use his height against smaller opponents. That being said, I doubt he will fight on the outside against Pavlik, it would serve no purpose. Williams will need to pressure Pavlik and avoid Pavlik's jab. IMO Williams has better endurance and is faster but Pavlik is stronger and is fighting at his ideal weight. I predict a late round KO by Pavlik, but if it goes the distance, I see Williams winning on the cards. I see it 50-50 at this time. I give praise for both fighters for making this fight happen! This is what the sport needs.
I wouldnt say he needs a jab, Honestly logic would tell me that Pavlik is just too big for him hits to hard etc.... However in watching Pavlik vs Taylor both fights and Hopkins vs Pavlik, Pauls style makes for a one sided UD over Pavlik, in all three fights when ever Taylor or Hopkins threw combonations on the inside Kelly did not have an answer for that he could not deal with those combonations. Sure you can say okay he was sick for the hopkins fight, but he wasnt for the Taylor rematch and though he did beat taylor in that rematch it was close, and Taylor does not have the consistant work rate that Paul has. this fight, not a pick em, Williams wide.....
Pavlik also telegraphs all is punches while Paul Williams doesn't. I know people don't seem to make a big deal of it, but this is one of the reasons Hopkins was able to show off so much against Pavlik. When someone telegraphs all their punches you can feel them coming, this is what Vitali was doing also. Paul Williams can throw non telegraphed punches, this is how he beat Quintana. In the first fight his punches were slow and telegraphed, and this allowed Quintana to time his punches and counter. In the second fight he didn't telegraph anymore and quickly knocked Quintana out. Floyd Mayweather Jr does not telegraph, Shane Mosley does not telegraph, Roy Jones does not telegraph, this is why even when other boxers can see their punches coming they don't know where its coming from. All Paul Williams will need to beat Pavlik is non telegraphed punches. He knows how to do it so enough rounds of sparring and he will be able to use it in the ring. This along with feints is how to deal with Pavlik. It's also how Cotto can deal with Pacman, Cotto must not telegraph his power punches, and he must use feints to offset Pacmans speed. Speed kills but feints and a good jab can stop even the fastest fighters as we see time and time again. Mayweather doesn't win because hes "fast", he wins because he has the skill. Judah was faster but Mayweather had better defense, better timing, his entire arsenal of punches are non telegraphed(unlike most fighters who only have a few punches like that), and he knows how and when to use feints. Roy Jones is another one, and Donaire also. If Dirrell can use this he can win but he currently telegraphs his power punches, you can see them coming by how he positions his feet and shoulders. It is the same problem Jermain Taylor has, you can see what hes going to do 90% of the time. But look at Andre Ward, he uses feints and hes much more difficult to read. You cannot know when he is going to power punch. Dirrell probably can do it but you don't see it in the tapes. Williams definitely can do it, but hes going to have to do it the entire fight with Pavlik.
This is why he must throw his punches without telegraphing. When you announce what punch you are about to throw by setting your feet, or if you follow a dumb pattern like fighting behind the jab, the other fighter knows every time you set your feet that way and throw that jab, you are about to throw your power punch and they simply have to punch with you. If they have more power to their punch, when you punch and leave yourself open you get knocked down or in some cases knocked out. Jermain Taylor got knocked out because he telegraphs all his punches and the other fighters wait until he slows down a bit and then they just punch when he punches.
jermain got punched b/c he was open to it, not b/c he was telegraphing is punches. paul is open to being hit. thats just the way he fights. its just that not too many people have been able to make him pay for it. he can smother smaller fighters (including winky) with punch output and work rate. pav also has a high workrate and comes right down the middle which is one of the places paul is open to being hit. jermain was open to being hit b/c his left hand was hanging around his waist. on top of that, steward and taylor knew exactly what pav was gonna do but b/c jt was open to being hit b/c of his style he couldnt prevent it, just like paul. jermain doesnt get countered to death (which if i understand your post, you are saying by saying other guys punch when he punches) the left jab distracts him if you have a straight right coming right down the pipe over his non existant left hand your in business (he didnt even see the right that put him into the corner in pav/jt I) pav gets hit...i have to agree with you. its just part of his game. BUT williams gets hit. again, its just part of his game. for some reason everyone thinks somehow he won't get hit against the best mw in the world yep just to break landshark and other aa fans' balls). williams is gonna get hit b/c he's open to it just like pav will get hit b/c he's open to it. telegraphing your shots or not. almost every opponent has found both of these guys. and for kelly, that's not gonna change w/ williams and for williams thats not gonna change with kelly.
movement, movement and smarts will be the key. If he stands in front of Pavlik, especially against the ropes, he will get bombed out.
Williams has a good southpaw jab ... when he commits to it ... sometimes he uses it as a measuring stick and flicks it out there ... other times he uses it as a lethal weapon.
