i think so. I was watching his fights with Miranda and Taylor today and i believe his boxing skills are very underrated. he isn't all speed and flash {Joe C. and PBF} but he has very solid boxing fundamentals and throws punches with very nice form. Plus, his jab is quality. Hard and accurate

I would have to agree with you. He had a very good amateur backround as well.

He's a very good boxer. I said before the Taylor fight that he was technically better (not as athletic), but technically better in that he throws straighter punches, keeps his hands up, picks off punches better, and works the body and the head.

He's not Mayweather or Calzaghe, but he's a good boxer and yes, an UNDERRATED one

oh of course. Everyone thinks hes slow and a robot, but when fighters get in the ring with him, everything changes. You cant be a slow fighter when you wear down opponents, which he does. People never look at the fact that he uses his offense so much that he can sacrifise defense, but when he can box very well, people just hate.

Well, he couldn't convince the judges that he is a superior BOXER than Taylor... in most of the rounds he clearly outboxed Taylor and when Taylor started to fade he outpunched him and knocked him out. What was on the scorecards is another story....

Good jab, pretty good technique so his boxing skills are underrated if you think his is just a puncher, but on the other hand his defense if pretty weak. He has to work on that because Taylor can give him troubles in the next fight, and if not Taylor, than a Winky, Kessler, Calzaghe and of course Abraham... But I like Pavlik and I can see that he is getting better and better. The sky is the limit for him.

Maybe because the guy's power is better noticed than anything else.

But the guy is an outstanding amateur fighter so he really has a good boxing skill.

To me one of the clues to Pavlik's boxing ability lies in the fact that we never see him with his face all ****ed up. A bit of swelling and a few bruises sometimes, but never anything to serious. Kelly does not seem to slip many punches. He's more into parrying them off his gloves and forearms which can be very deceptive. In the Taylor fight even compubox was giving JT credit for punches that were glancing off Kelly's gloves and forearms.

He has a wicked-wicked jab, he can go to the head or body with one of the best lead rights in the business, and he can throw some brutally accurate combinations. Offensively he's a machine. He throws 80-100 punches per round; more punches than many guys who fight at 126-130. (As bad as he got hurt in round 2 of the JT fight he still threw 60 punches!) His accuracy tends to average 40-50%. That means that by the 7th round he has hit his opponent somewhere around 500 times, if not more! Jesus! No wonder he has 29 knockouts to his credit. So, to answer the original question; his boxing skills are VERY under-rated.

However, he does need to tighten up his defense, and adjust his attitude a bit; he seems to be one of those guys who thinks the best defense is a good offense. That won't get him in to much trouble until he eventually has to move up to 175. Growing beyond 160 and 168 seems inevitable since he is 6"2" 1/2 and only 25 years old. At LHW he's going to need a more defensive minded style.

As I have said before; ANY belt holder has to have very good boxing skills....even if it doesnt seem like it thats what was behind them getting the belt

his jab is good if he's got a guy in front of him who hasn't heard about head movement and has little defence. talking of little defence, i reckon my nan could score cleanly on pavlik, he has some very impressive positive aspects to his game but some glaring issues that need taking care of otherwise he's gonna get his ass iced at some point down the line.

His boxing skills are very underrated i think bcuz people often put boxing skills with explosive athleticism, Pavlik isn't very explosive but his got good fundamentals to set up his punches

I had Taylor winning the fight before he got knocked out, I only had Pavlik winning two rounds. Yeah Pavlik was out jabbing Taylor, but Taylor was landing more power shots, and landing jabs of his own.

I'm not a Taylor fan, but I had Taylor winning rounds 2, 4, 5, 6. He defintley won rounds 2 and 5. Rounds 4 and 6 were defintley close, but watch the fight it will say on the HBO statsheet that Taylor landed more punches in those rounds. Even Emmanuel Steward thought Taylor was winning the fight, actually praising him in his corner for once.

About Pavlik's skills: He is not pretty in his style but brutally effectice. Boxing is confused with figure skating too often, fluid movements are nice to watch, but don't get you any wins. Pavlik reminds me of Vitaly: Because of their lanky frames, they will always look rugged but both are very effective in neutralizing their opponents seeming advantages. They are also faster than most people think. Long arms look slower when they move, much a boing 747 subjectively looks slower than a small plane, but in terms of absolute speed is a lot faster. Oh, and both Pavlik and Vitali were seriously undersetimated by Stewart before facing a Stewart - trained fighter. I hope Pavlik will be spared Vitali's injury karma though..
