See this is the thing. I don't remember it at all. But in fairness I hadn't found ESB until last year or so. Maybe on this site folks were talking him up big (seems to be obvious by poster recollections), but in the general US fanbase, nobody really gave a **** about Lacy. What had he done to be getting hyped in the first place?? Pavlik's hype (and I must admit it was more fun when he was unknown) is being generated by his nasty win over Miranda, which according to all experts and 95% of ESB, I was here by then, Pavlik didn't stand a snowballs chance in hell. Look at the HBO coverage for that fight. Pavlik was to be cannon fodder for Miranda. They showed a 15 min. documentary on Miranda before his ringwalk, and then just said "and here's Pavlik" walking/jogging into the ring. lol. Then his 2X winning over the guy that had beaten BHOP 2X didn't hurt either.
I'd never heard of him until he came over here (UK). But all the papers said he was gonna walk through Calzaghe.
Alot of respected poster as wel as reporters were going for Lacy, Joe was going through a bad time and was not looking good winning and Lacy looked the part, won a world title in quick time, and the ease in which he dispatched Ried (albeit a shop worn Ried) convinced enough people to make Calzaghe the underdog. Calzaghes stock has grown since those times though and the sensible majority beleive Joe would beat Kelly Pavlik - and rightfully so.
You also have to take into account that Hopkins averaged about 20 punches thrown per round, while Pavlik would thrower 4 - 5 times that many.
See, that's being honest. As was I. Writers and posters may have taken note of a title fight, and I can see you guys point that if they were all saying Lacy would walk thru Joe, the end result would be pure joy and hillarity to you guys. But the real deal is he really was no big star on the American scene.
Because Calzaghe is shot. The old version would have been hell for Pavlik, but not what showed up last weekend. His time is over, he needs to realize it. He had a dam good run, he just needs to let it go, and he can always talk ****. If he faces Taylor or Pavlick at 68 he will be KO'ed.
This is true, Pavlic has the work rate to keep up with Calzaghe and if they get exchanging wich Calzaghe likes to do, he will be out gunned. Calzaghe seems like he is easier to hit these days. He used to be more elusive, but even Kessler was landing on him good, so its reasonable to think that Pavlic could beat him. I still think Calzaghe decisions Taylor easy. I wonder how against Winky would play out. Last time at 170 Winky's workrate looked like **** but that was against Hopkins as well.
I can see what the thread starter is saying about Pavlik's power. I watched him catch Zertuche with bomb after bomb before finally going down in the late rounds.
I think its obvious who the harder puncher is... Pavlik. I was at the Top Rank gym with Hasim Rahman a while back and Kelly came in to get some work. I can tell you first hand that every fighter from 154 to 190 left the gym. Rock said he is legendary out there that nobody wants to box him for free, and that he hit a guy to the body once and the guy **** himself. I can also say that when he is walking around at 175-180 his speed is better and his punches are noticeably harder.
