That guy has skills, but he loses his head way too easily. In this fight, he started out strong, ducking, dodging, countering, going to the body, and keeping his head down. Later on, he kept his head straight in the air, was head hunting consistently, and looked reckless. Did that raw moose meat ruin his brain?
It's called being frustrated and shocked that his opponent is still there when he didn't expect him to. It's not easy to fight an opponent that is constantly moving and not allowing him to stand still and throw punches. Remember, Provodnikov can only land solid punches when he has his opponent standing still to be able to set his foot/stand still and unload. Algieri wasn't allowing him to do that which is why Provodnikov had to pin him to the ropes in order to land his shots. It's not Provodnikov who lacks the brains, it's the person watching and not understanding a damn thing.
Sometimes a guy has early success work against him because it takes him out of his game plan. He spent the whole rest of the fight looking for the knockout which wasn't going to come. He shoulda blasted that big ol' body of Algieri's.
I don't know if it's his IQ, or the fact that he's so 1 dimensional. We can talk about "will" all we want, and sometimes that will get the job done. But there are times where you run into a guy who sticks to his guns, and sticks to his gameplan. Algieri didn't allow himself to be lured into a war. He weathered the storm and did what works for him. I blame Roach more than Provo. Once again, we see Roach fail to make adjustments to his fighters. No traps. No jab. No counters. No change in tempo. The punch he was supposed to use was the uppercut, which was there all f-cking night. Provo knows how to fight one way. And when that doesnt work, he's predictable and one dimensional. So yes, I'd say he has a low IQ. By round 7 he should have saw that what he was doing wasn't working, and you dont just chase a guy around for 12 rounds taking jabs to the head the whole time. At some point you have to switch it up. Whether or not your trainer gives you the advice. Common sense should tell you to change something. Provo is at his best when he can overwhelm his opponents. Algieri wasnt there to be overwhelmed.
Let's face it, Ruslan approaches boxing with the mindset that two men are going to fight. Algieri and many American fighters approach it where he is going to outcraft you, i.e., outpoint you. Personally, this dance and run routine should be on Dancing with Stars, not in a boxing ring. And before I hear one more moron point out how Algieri was merely exercising the sweet science, don't.
I assume you are asking about "Ring IQ" versus the ability to excel at taking standardized tests? In ring IQ, Provo has always been at a disadvantage. He is a straight up brawler and brawlers hardly ever excel in the area of ring generalship. This is what was exposed in the fight.
The guy must have a good ring IQ if he got a trinket..and as for life IQ his a big leader for his people..!
He's never going to beat any good boxer, but he's exciting to watch. He doesn't have the ability to adjust. That's his problem. No boxing ability.
Roach told him to use the uppercut. Outside of that, we don't know what Roach said because most of the focus was on Algeri's corner.
there's limit to physical capabilities. if i ask you to dunk and you cant, can i say youre dumb? it's easy. you just need to jump higher. why cant you figure this out? same thing.
