I've heard many times that punching power comes from the legs yet two of the hardest punchers in the last 10 years - Wlad and Wilder have skinny legs compared to their upper body. Are strong legs overrated in punching power?
It starts from legs in my opinion. You need the base to generate power but if you don't have a strong enough core or the technique to translate that power to your fist it's kind of pointless.
Tommy Hearns had really thin legs at welter and was one of the hardest punchers of all time, there`s a boxing channel called boxing physique that suggest AJ`s power comes from his huge forearms, I`m not saying AJ is on steroids, I hope he`s not, but would steroids increase a boxers power? Naseem Hamed had massive legs compared to his body and he was one of the hardest punching feathers of all time.
Skinny legs can still be quite strong you know? But good punchers take power from multiple sources of their bodies anyway. Your hip, shoulder, back muscles, also pretty much depending on the punch and the person that throws them. Punching up needs more power coming from the legs, and punching down needs less obviously. Many, many ways to throw hard punches.
I don't believe power has much to do with your physical attributes, I known huge dudes that, at least to look at, should be able to bang and yet they couldn't crack an egg.
Good point, guys like Hearns and Wilder have skinny legs even Wlad has skinny legs and they all had immense power. These guys generate power through their legs not by having big, strong legs but by having long levers and by planting their legs to maximise power.
Yeah I think that's a factor too, bone density definitely could make a difference. I know there is a gene that some people have that gives them harder bones than most people and these people very rarely break bones. No body in my family as ever broken a bone in their lives. My dad is 86 dad numerous falls in recent years, some really bad ones and never even had a fracture. Speed too is a big factor, especially in regards to one punch KO power.
In physics Wilder is like to walking as the bumble bee is to flight, defies the laws of known physics. * And yes I know the bumble bee thing is BS but it's a myth believed by some.
Good point. Wilder and Hearns have very skinny legs, but hit pretty hard. Jozeph Parker has thick legs and good speed yet he's far from being power puncher
