Does Randy Turpin deserve more credit than he gets?

This was pointed by @Momus in another thread.

Turpin was the second of three boxers to beat Robinson before he had a two and half year layoff.

Of the three, Turpin was the only one to do it without being about a weight division heavier. Robinson may have been past his peak, but consider how much credit Frazier gets for beating a clearly dimminished post layoff Ali.

ATG pretty much don't lose without confounding factors, that's why they are ATGs.

All things considered it surely has to be up there amoung the greatest wins in boxing history.

Physically, Turpin looks like a modern fighter who got time-machined into the 50s. Right down to the weight lifting footage.

Also, yes, he deserves credit for beating Robinson.

I like how Turpin looks on film. It was an excellent fight. I was unaware he didn't get credit though??

Did Turpin lift weights? He must have been a pioneeer in that case.

@reznick included some of the footage in a highlight reel. I don't know where he got it, but it was interesting.

Wonder who introduced him to the practice? It's long before it became common.

    He also rode the elliptical.
The methods were given to him by a time traveler.

The trouble with Turpin was he had a pretty short prime.
He seemed to go into decline not long after the 2nd Robinson fight.
I think the prime version though gives any middleweight trouble.

Jokes aside, there was enough of a prejudice among boxers against lifting heavier weights back then that it's interesting Turpin did it.

And Patterson might have as well.

Boxed in the navy .Didn't know about the weights but he was a very strong bloke.Awkward stile and hit hard .lived not far from me in Leamington spa .Used to go into town and pick fights with the local thugs in his mid forties !!!.lost all his money and ended up running a cafe near the bus Depot .The Cafe was due from demolition and that may of been the reason he took his own life.A sad end to a very good fighter

The trouble with Turpin was that area between women's legs.

What makes you think he had a short prime?

I give him plenty, personally, and he made #37 on my ATG list at MW.

How much credit do you think he should get, Vesti?

Hard to say exactly, it was mostly just rhetorical. Like I said, I think it has to be up there as one of the greatest single wins of all time

Well when he beat Robinson he was just 23 year old.
By the time he lost to Olsen 2 years later for the vacant title the decline had already started.
Even in the build up to that fight in the States he was distracted by women problems and wasn’t training like he should have been.
After that he started to get beat off fighters he should have beat, and he faded away to a tragic end.
