I think mercer was underrated but now he's a bit overrated imo, definitely a solid contender and could become champ in any era
Ray's problem is that he falls into the category of underachiever . He was inconsistent and at times didn't perform to his full potential ...
For all his strength and toughness, he didn't perform well enough at the high level to be viewed as underrated.
That’s just it, human, he’s got his bad moments and good ones - hard nights and easy ones, you don’t do your best work every time you come into the office but when you look at his heights you see his limitations and what held him back but respect where what he had and where it got him. He lived the dream.
Mercer got cooled off by Holmes and exposed a bit. Ill say this for him though despite some up and downs after at some point Ray went back to the drawing and he learned how to box. Ray Mercer post Larry Holmes had a very good left jab. He was able to give Lennox Lewis one of his rougher nights some even feel he should've won. He outjabbed the taller Lewis much of that bout.
I uploaded this one a while ago because I couldn't find it online elsewhere. Love Mercer, especially when he was motivated and displayed that killer instinct of his. This content is protected
He was underrated by most people, I thought he was a very good fighter, he could have taken his conditioning alot more serious but he always made for tough fights against the best fighters in the division. He also has one of the most brutal highlight reel knockouts under his belt against Tommy The Duke.
