Does Ricky Burns win over Katsidis diminish Marquez's victory?

I mean, Katsidis did give Marquez a tough fight, even dropping him in the 3rd round. What are your toughts?

I never rated the Katsidis victory particuarly highly anyway, but it hasn't diminished as a result of tonight's performance against Ricky Burns. Katsidis has only ever known to fight one way.

I don't think people gave Marquez that much of a credit, Katsidis sucks and it still surprised me how much problems he gave to Marquez.

Katsidis is a very strong come forward fighter who packs a decent punch. That's it. There's no really defensive qualities to speak of, no real punching form to speak of, no real footwork work to speak of etc. It doesn't stop him from being probably my favourite consistently active fighter but he's meat and potatoes for a guy like Marquez.

Good win, but only because Marquez is campaigning at a weight where he relatively vulnerable and a shade or two worse than he was 4 years ago. I don't think Burns beating Katsidis takes anything away from Marquez, Burns fought a decent fight, quite clever, if lacking in activity for periods.

Marquez went to war with a warrior, took a few nicks and bumps, but ultimately beat the guy at his own game.

Let's not forget who stopped Katsidis, and who merely took a close points win over him.

I think a decent question would be, where do you rank Katsidis as a win on the resumes of Casamayor, Diaz, Marquez and Burns? Rather than does x fighters victory over y makes z fighters win over y less important? Ya dig?

People need to realize that Katsidis has taken to many hard shots to the head......he was beat down and knocked out by JMM. In his next fight after Marquez, Kats got thoroughly outboxed and castigated by Robert Guerrero.

With each passing fight, Kats brings less and less to the ring with him.

I actually think this is correct. Katsidis' fall will be even longer and uglier/less dignified than Gatti's.

 This is so typical. It always takes away from somebody, rather than give credit to somebody else. Negative mu****as. It's not about Burns' credit for the win, a dangerous step into a new division with many picking Kats by stoppage. Instead of credit to the victor, we're going back over the other people who beat Katsidis to take away from their victory. Marquez somehow gets less credit for an earlier win. Jesus! :patsch The fickle ****ery never ceases to amaze.

I agree people need to credit Burns with showing people he's better than they thought he was.

Ricky Burns vs Kevin Mitchell, bring it on.

    -No.

-Fights, achievements, etc need to take into consideration BOTH the significance of what it meant at the time and how we can view it in retrospect taking everything we now know into consideration. The weight of which makes our personal preferences our own. Some people only consider the latter.

-However, I believe JMM got less credit than he deserved considering Katsidis was a clear cut top 3 lightweight (I believe The Ring had him #1), even in retrospect. The fight was a top 10 exciting fight of the year for sure, likely top 5 and some peoples FOTY. He got knocked down, but that's what JMM does, he battles back like a warrior and thus, beat Katsidis at his own game.

-For this thread to pop up the day after Burns vs. Katsidis is ridiculous... This thread might belong in another 5 years when discussing JMM and Katsidis' link after both have retired in reflection.

-Props to Ricky Burns for a great fight for somebody stepping up in weight. He could've picked a whole slew of easier opponents and only a few tougher. Going into the fight, I would still rank Katsidis at LW ahead of all but JMM, Rios, DeMarco, Guerrero, and probably M. Vazquez.

My thoughts are that this is an idiotic question, and a stupid way to look at things.
