    Agreed, regarding Darius.

    DM

    They avoided each other.

    Julian Jackson

Jackson was KOd by McClellan in a title two weeks before Roy defeated Hopkins for the other piece of the title.

He was defeated again when he rematched McClellan a year later, worse this time. Roy would have had anal sex in the ring with this old dude !

    Gerald McClellan

There was a short window where this could have been made (about a year).
Both seemed content to make other defences.

Do you seriously think Roy would have had trouble here?

    Nigel Benn

Again, a short window where this could have happened, then Roy moved up in weight to fight Toney.

    Chris Eubank

Never really much cause to fight Eubank who lost his piece of the 168 title to Collins a couple of months after Roy won HIS piece. Despite a rematch, he never got it back again.

    Jirov

Not a big name (despite being an under-rated boxer, IMO) and not in the same weight division. True, Roy eventually moved up, leapfrogging Cruiser, but that was for a legacy bout in the more glamourous heavywt division.

And Roy's 120-108 victim defeated Vassily anyway.

    Hopkins rematch

Bernard was too greedy. You don't dictate terms when
    i) The other guy is a bigger name
ii) The other guy already beat you and YOU need the rematch.

I've addressed why these fights didn't happen.

And remember, you're operating from hindsight. As I've pointed out, they make more sense in 2009 than they did at the time.

Calzaghe gets tagged with this all the time too.

I see lists of folks he 'should' have fought.

These often include prime Hopkins (whose greed dreailed their 2002 fight) and Toney (When the **** was THAT supposed to happen? )

Tocker Pudwill's name is brought up derisively (without regard to the circumstances of how the fight came about),

SRL defended against Davey 'Boy' Green and Ali defended against Jean Pierre Coopman, both without hoots of derision.

Some could argue that Leonard would have done better to fight Pryor and Arguello than Finch and Howard.

My money would have been on Leonard in both cases, but this is how post facto (very post facto) questionings of resumes come up.

That doesnt hold true in boxing...Sadler beat the crap out of willie pep several times and Pep still ranks much higher on just about any list you will come across. there are many example of two greats fighting with the one that won being on the short side on all time great list.

I think that everyone EXCEPT DM fans will admitt that neither guy was all that interested in fighting one another. And example, and proof of that can be given. It was alot of he said she said going on there. bottom line is Jones career was built on beatting fighters and Dm's was built on claiming to want to fight Jones.

Your burning energy with this cat, nothing that can be said will sway his thinking. He thinks that DM is a greater fighter then Jones, and that Jones ducked him, then so be it. The reason is he somehow thinks that by saying that Jones ducked all these fighters that it shows that he ducked DM which is the whole point of what he is trying to do.

That isnt true, in fact after several fights Jones told DM and I quote "Bring yo ass, you got to bring ass to get ass"

Rummy is talking about a made up story about Jones asking HBO not to mention DM's name in his fight, which is a lie because DM's name came u just about every Jones fight from 1997 until DM got beat.

I can respect that, but still. Not only was Marciano THE MAN, but Ruiz was....well, John Ruiz.

Nobody in his right mind would ever say that Roy was THE CHAMP. It's pretty obvious that he exploited a weak heavyweight whose style was very favorable to Roy. Still, a very impressive feat, and one I believe tends to be bother overrated and underrated, depending on who you talk to.

And yet many still question Roy's hear, desire, and yes, courage.

These people would be totally silenced had Roy fought Lewis.

    Gotchya.

Well, had he retired after the Tarver fight....don't you think that would have been anti-climatic, given the magnitude of his previous fight?

I thought he did the right thing granting Tarver a rematch. Unfortunately for Jones, Tarver timed him perfectly on something he and Buddy had specifically been working on.

Really? I think some Hagler fans would beg to differ.
    ;)

I had the fight even at 5 rounds apiece entering the championship rounds. In the end, those two rounds in the end sealed the deal for Roy.

That's absolutely my favorite Jones moment as a fan. It was really the only time he had to overcome adversity, and still is.

    Perhaps.

The fight with Tito was especially disgraceful in my eyes. At least with Joe, it was two guys from the same era and the same weight range. The Trinidad fight was a joke.

Well, it depends on what you mean by contenders since Duran's best days. For example, would someone like Hagler qualify?

Off the top of my head, strong arguments can be made for Pea, Hopkins, and Mayweather, and lesser arguments can be made for various others.

What's the cutoff for Duran's best days?

Also, I remember that poll (I voted Pea), and personally, I don't think you can weigh such polls too heavily.

After all, most boxing fans on this board tend to be a bit younger, and as such, there are a lot more die hard Jones fans around here than there are Pea fans.

That might get counter-balanced to an extent by the fact that Roy also has more haters, but I think the bias still favors Jones around here, so take those results with a grain.

When, in this thread, did I ever use the phrase "ducked"?

Also, when did I say DM is greater fighter than Jones? I don't recall ever thinking that, and I sure as hell don't recall writing it.

Or are you just talking out of your ass?

He who thinks Joe Frazier is not elite.

I'm not agreeing with Rumsfield that Roy ducked Darius.

Nor that Roy wanted Darius to remain unmentioned during his fights.

He (Rumsfield) didn't make either assertion.

    I'm agreeing with him that

In addition, I'm pointing out that I don't believe Roy avoided guys at his prime (I've addressed his list.)

Finally, I'm asserting that IMO, Roy is the greatest boxer of the past 25 years.

In all honesty, to be fair, I think I did say that Roy asked HBO not to mention DM's name during a telecast once.
    Fair enough!
    :thumbsup

Let me ask you this, cuchulain:

As a Roy fan, what disappointed you most in his career when he was at his absolute best?

Hopkins would outbox Adamek. Roy at this point will get tagged and put to sleep.

    Nope.

    Two reasons.

1 He's too far back (I'm using 25 years, somewhat arbitrarily)

2 Jones is greater than Hagler any way I look at them, even if tI go back 50 years.

Pea is the only one I would entertain. And I lean towards Roy.

For reasons I've made in this thread and others, I rank him over Bernard.

Mayweather too, although if Floyd had fought longer and beaten a few more names, I would have considered him.

Roy was just too dominant in his 'great' stretch. He lost very few rounds and had no 'narrow escapes.'

Compare Prime Floyd-Castillo (1) where IMO, Floyd got a gift, with Roy-Toney, where Roy scored a shutout.

The poll was only confirmation that there is serious debate over Roy / Pea.

I leaned to Roy for some time before.

You may have somewhere at some point in time.

But not in post #150, which is the one I responded to with "agreed."

You may have heard that Alexander wept because, at age 33, there were no more worlds to conquer. (His grasp of geography was incomplete).

Well, what disappointed most was that there were not more great names he could have taken on. I'm disappointed that DM never happened, but I'm reasonably certain Roy would have prevailed ( just as Joe would have ass-raped Ottke).

Ali had Liston, Frazier, and Foreman, among others.

SRL, Duran, Hearns and Hagler all had each other.

And some of them had Beniez and Barkley.

Roy had Hopkins (pre-prime) and Toney. And Ruiz.

He was never challenged to the nth degree. (rds 11&12 of Tarver 1 came closest).

First I should say that I think that Adamek is doing fine in the guys that he has been fighting, I personally have no problem with what he is doing. I was really only pointing to the fact that many here tend to overlook one fighter, then bash another when both are doing the same thing.

As far as the Jones DM thing goes, both guys came to the same stop sign but took different roads to get there. I think that DM or I should say Kohls was scared to fight Jones. It was much more profitable to fight second tier fighter in Germany while saying that the next fight would be the "BIG" fight. While Jones just never really thought much of DM, had no interest in fighting in Germany or for that WBO belt that he held.

Boxing is alot like politics, many will believe what is said on this side while many will believe what is said on that side, when all along the truth lays somewhere inbetween. I know this for sure Lou Dibella who is no fan of Roy Jones, said that when he was running HBO he personally called Kohls and asked him what would it take to get DM to the States for a fight with Jones, and he said "I still waiting for them to return my call". Now Im not saying that Jones had agreed to fight DM, but it showed that the level of interest in the fight wasnt as high as Kohl's and DM lead his fans to believe.
