Does Roach see something we don't with Cotto vs Martinez? He did with Pac vs DLH

he definitely needs to apply pressure from the opening bell and work the body. I think he'd be successful if he does that. break him down in a smart way, the way he does.

 

when they fight a nearly 40 yr old injury prone one trick pony...anything is possible.

i think freddie is banking on cotto's ability to cut the ring...his good head movement and his willingness to trade in the trenches. all those things will work in cotto's favor. the other thing is that martinez tends to take a break in the mid rounds. on the flip side...cotto fades 10-12. this should be interesting. if cotto can force martinez into trading early...he's got a great chance to beat him. but if he can't cut that ring...and allows martinez to fight at his pace...pot shotting from the outside...it might be a long night for cotto. with sergio coming off his knee injury, i seriously doubt he's going to be as mobile as he used to be. and with the knuckle injury on his left hand...he'll be like a declawed lion. don't be shocked if cotto stops martinez. i can't put a victory for him on the same level as duran over barkley.

 

i called the stoppage win for pac in the 8th round.

i heard the rumors about valero and ortiz whoopin his ass in sparring. i knew that he had the idea to train at 147 which was a huge mistake. it was the reason i called a stoppage win.

he fought forbes at 150. yes...those 3lbs make a huge difference. also...forbes wasn't half the puncher pac was...and he cracked oscars orbital socket.

 

But my whole point is the rehydrating not 147.. he weighed in at 145 and a day later weighed 146.. Thats not right.

i always believed there was something fishy going on with his fights. roger made a statement after the hatton fight that ricky was only allowed to gain 5lbs after the initial weigh in. arum, hbo...and everyone else involved need to be investigated and brought to justice. pac has never been the fighter he's been made out to be. it's reminiscent of the emperor in the movie 'gladiator' with russel crowe. remember the scene where he visits him and stabs him before they fight? that's what happened to most of pacs foes prior. and with roach's recent statement about not knowing what ariza put in those 'shakes.' it all becomes very suspect.

 

I see what Roach sees. Cotto always destroys slick defensive fighters. He knocked out Zab Judah, Carlos Quintana, and Yuri Foreman: those fights were mismatches. And he also broke Paul Mailignaggi's jaw en route to a clear unanimous decision win.

If you try to outbox Cotto, you lose (unless you're Floyd, but he's much better than Sergio). Can't you see that? The only guys who beat Cotto were offensive-minded: Margarito, Pacquiao and Trout (who played offense for that fight).

Sergio will fight the only way he knows, and he'll get KOed. Sergio is past his prime.

 

I may be wrong but I always thought of Martinez as a counter puncher.
I see Cotto pressing the action but getting picked off by Martinez regularly.

 

Martinez has been slowing down for years, and maybe it wasn't obvious when he was fighting guys like Macklin, Barker or Chavez because they didn't have the skills to exploit it, but it was apparent in the Murray fight. If the guy who fought Murray shows up, I have no doubt Cotto will be beat him. Murray was walking in on Martinez just with a high guard and a jab. Even Macklin was neutralizing Martinez on the outside just by having a little head movement and good footwork.

 

It's not my fault most people failed to realize that Oscar hadn't fought at WW in 7.5 years heading into the fight.

 

Cotto will not stop Martinez, in fact Cotto will end up being Koed by a quick countering and hard punching Martinez. Theres a reason Murray was all turtled up for most of the fight and you can see what happened in the 12th round when he tried to go after Martinez.

 

Who is the last world class fighter that Cotto broke down with pressure and working the body?

It's been a loooooong time.

 

2 of the fighters that got my attention years ago were Cotto and Floyd. These two went on to have a great fight together. I am just dying to see what diffrence it will be for Cotto to be working with Freddy. Great trainers and former great fighters can surptise folks sometimes.

Cotto has had some stamina issues, like in the Floyd fight, but he landed well, and it was an entertaining competive fight regardkess of the points differential.

Roach has said he would like to see Cotto go back to the style he used to have. That style will be hard to beat for sergio, unless he goes forward and applies great pressure to nullify and take away cottos boxing ability.....

I would love to see a 2nd fight between Cotto and Floyd, which means Cotto has to not only beat, but destroy Sergio. Destroying is a hard ask against tough guys, so a good bone crunching win would attract attention.......will Floyd fight a guy who has been trabsformed by a new coach???

Floys is outstanding. But would jeopardising his O make him pick an easier fight with Khan or a Maidana??? this coming September???:think

i expect that it will take a few more fights for them to get familiar with each other before cotto gets better. Then i expect Cooto to be at his best once again.

Having a solid gameplan-not just a see what happens approach, can pay big dividends to the final outcome. Freddy is a great tactician. Lets see if this comes into play somewhere along the way before we write him offgood
