Of late, I have to sit back and question Roy's raison d'etre at this stanza in his life and why he's made the choices he has. Let's take a look at some of his recent actions and put them into perspective with prior events. Now, before you get all indignant and frothy at the mouth, please consider this is only a QUESTION and not my foregone conclusion. I genuinely have not made up my mind either way on the answer. At any rate, let's look at a few recent developments and facts which have recently come to light: 1)Wanted to sign for two fights with Joe (one in cardiff, one in US) -- Now, who in God's name -- and Roy Jones of all people -- jumps to conclusions about the aftermath of a big fight and the desire to secure an immediate rematch? This is the same man who told B-hop it was 60-40 or NOTHING for a rematch, and yet, even before the cards are drawn up on this one, even before knowing how conclusive the fight could be for either figher, he wants to sign for a second match? It has the potential to seriously dampen his legacy if he was to somehow beat Joe and then turn around and fight in Wales of all places for the rematch. 2)Dropped hints to hbo about bringing him back for commentary -- Back in January, when Roy was asked at a press conference if he missed doing commentary for HBO, he emphatically said "No", and suddenly now he's looking for work with them again. He made comments to Ross Greenburg about this at the US press conference. 3)Working color commentary for Setanta in the UK -- This is the same man who wouldn't dream of crossing the pond for fights, admittedly hates flying, but is now going to work commentary in the United Kingdom? Perhaps I'm missing a big piece of the equation, and he would only be covering US fights? These are all strange, out-of-character moves by RJJ which could either be culminating from : A) Desire for increased monetary gain or B) An urge remain entrenched in the boxing spotlight through whatever means necessary or C) A mixture of both What do you think it is? Is it possible he's pulled a holyfield/tyson and squandered away his fortunes and needs pull out of debt?
I belive, That he (Roy) still feels in what he has left... I don't imagine he if fighting for the $. Roy's IMO, trying to make up for alot of wasted time & fight's lost during his youth. (Too much talk....)
No, the question of him needing money, or whether he's in this fight for the money. The question itself is what they talked about. The answer, according to them, is no.
I don't think Roy needs the money. He's actually a simple country ass dude when it comes down to it and spends most his time in pensacola fishing and raising animals. I just think he's been humbled by his losses, getting fired from HBO and misses the spotlight....I could be wrong about that but I think Roy is trying to ressurect his career and is looking for a future in the sport once his fighting days are over.
My first post was intended to add insight, but not kill the thread. Your question may have put a fork in it. But that's just their best guess. The Ring hasn't seen Roy's bank slips. Maybe he's been spending all that money on pressing up his rap CD's.
Has anybody heard about Roy's lifestyle? I think that has everything to do on whether he needs money or not. I dont think he does, but is he still endorsing anybody??
