Lyden Gardener, Utube, put together an intersting video saying he's Sonny's grandson and displaying what he say's is his birth certificate from May 8th, 1932. He also says Sonny had seven siblings not in the 20's. Any of you see this and have an opinion?
As far as I was aware Sonny didn’t have a birth certificate as he wasn’t born in a hospital I could be wrong but I remember reading that somewhere
Well he would need to provide proof that it's a legitimate birth certificate. It would need to be the correct state, city, and have the seal. Many certificates will have a footprint and names of both parents. The date seems legitimate though as it's commonly speculated that he was born in the early 30's. If he was born in a hospital you'd think boxing historians and investigators would have searched through the building's records.
I have him on Facebook. He's a good guy. But I doubt the legitimacy of the birth certificate. I don't believe he was 32 when facing Ali. He seemed much older. Their's also speculation that he wasn't Charles Liston but perhaps an older brother using his identity. The 1928 birthday seems much more plausible.
He also led the biggest gang in Philly iirc. Here is his obit https://www.cjfuneralhome.com/obituary/wiiliam-wingate-iii. Incidently if you look at his birthday, it was September 20th, 1962 which is perfectly in line with one of the book's claim that Liston's son was born five days before the Patterson bout.
I actually thought BC stood for something else when I read the heading. Nick Tosches book about Sonny touched upon it (no pun).
I've seen plenty of slow news days but that would be pretty desperate to make a whole thread about it.
That's a relief , I thought you were referring to something else Sonny was famous for.BC the first word being Big!
I respect your opinion but i don't buy the idea of liston being an old guy when he fought Ali, he did not look that old, simply some black people looks older, Foreman looked much older than 24 when he fought Frazier but he was 24 and he looked a ****ing alpha male in the amateurs at 18, Tyson looked 30 when he was 20. I think that it is perfectly possible that Liston was between 32 and 34 maximun 35 when he fought Ali. He was not older than 35 years old.
Here is the line I was referring to "As Sonny Liston waited in his dressing room before challenging Floyd Patterson on September 25, 1962, chances are he was thinking more about his five-day-old son," which fits perfectly with Mr. Wingate's birthday of September 20, 1962 on the obit I posted. I was wrong though. It wasn't an obit, it was actually a story of Mr. Wingate http://www.boxing.com/son_of_a_champion.html
