Mikey's wins above 130 (Rojas was a featherweight and most definitely not a 140 pounder) Two fights after fighting Mikey, Zlaticanin got blasted out in 2 by some nobody, one of those nobodies loses was (a SD to be fair) to Carlos Ocampo who Spence iced in a round. Robert Easter arguably lost 3 of his previous 4 fights prior to Mikey relieving him of his world title which he didn't even deserve to have wrapped around his waist in the first place because he definitely deserved to lose, at the very least, one of his controversial wins against Commey, Shafikov, and Fortuna and the only reason he still held the title was because he was under the banner of Haymon Protection Services and he had home advantage, which is especially advantageous when it comes pre-packaged with the additional safety net of a near clean sweep of home city or home country refs and judges - 8 of the 9 officials for those fights were from the US, the lone non US judge was from Canada. Hell, 2 of the 3 home guards scored Easter vs Shafikov 120-108 in favour of their boy ie. a fight many feel Shafikov either won, deserved a draw, or was a real close affair. FTR, then undefeated Ukrainian Ivan Golub was robbed blind on the undercard by the 3 US judges who worked his fight against Jamontay Clark, like Easter another unbeaten American fighter who was fighting in their hometown. Golub was understandably utterly stunned upon the announcement of the decision and even Clark's home fans booed it loudly. Lipinets was 13-0, way too inexperienced to take on a fighter on Mikey's calibre and experience at that stage of his career, and won his world title in a vacant title match up against a balding Japanese fisherman (Kondo) who had 6 loses on his ledger, against fighters with records like this who the vast majority of fans who have no interest in the Japanese domestic scene have never heard of. 2-7-0 Tamotsu Morita 20-4-1 Yoshitaka Kato 24-4-1 Nihito Arakawa 11-5-0 Tomoya Yamada 27-8-1 Ricky Sismundo Kondo also fought to a MD draw against a 7-5 Masayoshi Kotake and recently got knocked out by Apinun Khongsong who to be fair had 1 more pro fight (14-0) under his belt than Lipinets did when he fought Mikey albeit what looks to me completely padded 14-0 record. http://boxrec.com/en/boxer/767555 Lipinets best wins? Akondo, Leonardo Zappavigna, Walter Castillo, and Levan Ghvamichava. Hmmm.. are any of those guys even C - level? And Lipinets only scraped by Eric Bone on a SD in his last outing for goodness sake and IIRC many felt he deserved to lose it too. And that just leaves us with Broner who like his little bro Easter was under the banner of Haymon Protection Services and benefited enormously from home advantage and favourable judges. Lost to Maidana, Porter, Manny and Mikey but then we have all his highly controversial wins against Quintero, Ponce Don, Granados, Paulie, and the draw against Vargas and many feel he was more than a little fortunate not to come away with multiple loses from those fights. Don't get me wrong, I think Mikey is a fantastic fighter and I rate him highly. Spence literally has one win over a world class opponent his own size and they were coming off a stoppage loss, a beating, a terrible eye injury and gruesome surgery to repair it (I can expand on said gory details and the psychological trauma Brook had to go through after that not knowing if he would even be able to see out of the eye properly again and continue with his career. And if you don't think all of that came flooding back to haunt him after his other eye went against Spence you're the not the opposite of wrong and left), back down from 160 after bulking up to fight at that weight - and it's hardly the best kept secret that getting down to 147 was absolute hell for him prior to bulking up to fight at 160. And the head clash in round 8 of the Spence fight, if it wasn't what caused the injury, clearly exacerbated it to a great degree and is what caused it to swell up dramatically, going from something which wasn't even noticeable to something very conspicuous and from a minor to a major problem. This content is protected This content is protected Other than Brook who has Spence beaten? Career 140 pounder featherfist Algieri who was 1-2 in his last 3 fights? Career 140 pounder featherfist Peterson who should've been 1-2 in his last 3 fights? 42 y/o featherfist Bundu? Algieri and Bundu aren't just featherfists, they're freaking Paulie level featherfists for goodness sake lol That's Spence's resume lol. Mikey is the better and much more accomplished fighter but size matters and Spence is a bursting at the seams 154 pounder who somehow manages to boil that big frame of his down to 147 and Mikey is a small 140 pounder who is Pudgy Pete and soft at that weight. I think Spence is a very good fighter too, albeit his #10 P4P ranking by The Ring is the absolute highest he deserves to be, if even top 10 at all, and his claims of being #1 are both comedy and delusional gold lol
No credit. Mikey is moving 2 weight classes to fight a roided PEDs filled Spence. Mikey should've atleast had a couple tune-ups at 147lbs before fighting Spence. He should've fought at 140lbs then gradually move up to 147lbs. These weight jumps are too soon, but the $8 million plus on the table was difficult for him to turn down. Mikey seems very happy this fight is happening, because he's going to be a multi-millionaire. The way Mikey has been all smiles these last 24 hours since the weigh in, seems that he's happy he's getting his millions and is not focused on the fight.
I really hope Spence doesn't carry Mikey. I'll be very disappointed if Spence win by UD if its obvious that Mikey can't hurt him.
Ok those wins are weak for the reasons serge explained. Where we differ is I think a win over world class brooks dwarfs everything Garcia did. Also the fact that algeiri best provodnikov makes him a better fighter than the likes of lipinets or Easter. Peterson beat khan, which is also a better achievement than what any of mikeys opponents have. Mikeys skill is overrated, Spence is actually the real deal despite his thin resume.
Ok mate let's agree to differ. I suspect Spence will win tonight's fight for the reasons I set out. I would like to see him fight Crawford, Thurman, Porter, Pac or any of the 154 contenders. I think that's when we will find out more about him.
youre in one thread saying spence struggled to make weight, in this one youre hoping he doesnt carry mikey. youre just looking for reasons to knock this fight. i have to ask myself, why? the most obvious place to start is your well known and documented bias. once i determined the bias was not against or in favor of either fighter, that left canelo. that clear enough?
No way Spence carries him. In the last press conference Errol ended it by saying it's going to be a one sided massacre, and that he'll (Mikey) be wishing he had taken his brothers advice. The way he said it, you can tell something pushed him over the edge.
i think its the fact that there more people booing him than cheering for him in his home town. i think he took that hard.
I'm not looking for reasons to knock the fight. I'm stating my feelings about it since I will be watching it tonight. True, I'm not crazy excited about it one bit since Spence is a huge WW, and to me Mikey is a true LW, so I don't think this fight is competitive on paper, but since I will be watching I do hope we do get a great fight. I just made an observation about Spence looking drained, that's all. I didn't say it was going to affect him one way or another. As far as Spence carrying Mikey, I mean it, I hope he doesn't. I was a bit skeptical about this fight from the get go, I don't trust Haymon.
fair enough. my mind pics up patterns or breaks in patters, even when im not looking for them. my mistake.
