Does the fact that Pernell Whitaker had a less than "barn burner" style affect his perceived status as an ATG? Or is his ability,and legacy unchallenged, and undeniable?
It was certainly the reason he was at the brunt of some decisions, although I wonder now, the fact most recognize this is the case it may be acting like a counter-weight and has evened the score in more recent years. Many are happy to pop him in their top 20 of all time.
Definitely one of the best ever in my lifetime as a boxing fan. His style SHOULD N'T affect his rating.
It doesn't for me. I can understand that his style, coupled with average hitting power, never made him a top-shelf draw when he was active, but he was a phenomenal fighter. He entertains me in a different way than does, say, a welterweight Hearns, but I find him good to watch.
