a Calzaghe vs Lacy fight ?? I mean, lacy was the puncher, as is Kelly...Joe was the boxer, as is Taylor ?? Hmmmmmmm:think :think
Calling Taylor a boxer is a huge stretch. Pavlik is the boxer puncher, and Taylor is the bull with the experience, and both have youth. This is going to be a great fight, it has to be.
Its not a huge stretch, tho it is a stretch. Taylor has a TREMENDOUS jab and great footwork. I think the original poster meant that Taylor is much more fundamentally sound...and Pavlik is more of the fighter that would tend to get into a brawl. I also believe this will be a good fight, tho I believe Taylor will win UD.
For all the fundamentals that Taylor has, it's suprising that Steward would focus on "getting back to the basics" for training camp. From watching the Taylor/Pavlik build-up on HBO, Taylor has a huge chip on his shoulder from his own backyard calling him out. And I have a feeling he's going to throw boxing out the door once he gets hit with a big shot or land one on Pavlik that has an effect.
This fight reminds me of corrales vs mayweather, with everybody expecting the brawler with devastating punching power to knock out the more experienced and talented fighter.Taylors experience, overall speed and skills will be the difference in this fight.
I promise you that it wont be Corrales-Mayweather. Taylor doesn't have the footwork, counter-punching ability, or the lightning-fast speed to do to Pavlik what Mayweather did to Corrales.
I think that this is probably the better annalogy. Just watched the Miranda Pavlik fight last night and had that one ended early in the third as well that fight would have been a pretty close copy of hagler hearns.
Tho I agree that this will probably look nothing like Chico - PBF, but I cant agree on the fact that Taylor lacks good footwork. I always felt (even through the fights where Jermaine struggled) that his footwork is phenominal. Think about it, even when backing up (or getting backed up) he never puts himself in position to be off balance or tripped up. Also, when throwing punches, he uses his feet tremendously to get full leverage on everything. I think, if anything, its upper body movement (or lack thereof) that tend to get Jermaine into more trouble then naught. He leans in waaaay too much. It looks like they have worked on this for the Pavlik fight, which is good, because if he leans too far into one of those BIG right hands, my prediction just may be wrong..... It wont be tho.....Taylor UD.
Oh, I agree with you about footwork - he has good footwork, just not to the level of Floyd Mayweather.
That would be wild if Taylor-Pavlik became this generation's Hagler-Hearns and Taylor played the part of Hearns because it would stay consistent that Manny was in both of their corners. However, I don't expect it to be a brutal slugfest quite like that.
