Does the UFC need to go after fighters from other sports?

    Except Miller isn't even top 20, let alone top 5, and beating him doesn't put Oliviera in the title hunt just yet. There's still a lot of guys in the LW division between Miller and the likes of Sherk, Penn, Edgar, and Maynard.

    If we are just talking UFC and not world wide MMA rankings, then Miller's probably top 15. I'd rank all these guys ahead of him of the top of my head:

    Frankie Edgar
    Gray Maynard
    BJ Penn
    Sean Sherk
    Kenny Florian
    Diego Sanchez
    Clay Guida
    George Sotiropolous
    Joe Stevenson
    Nate Diaz
    Melvin Guillard
    Evan Dunham
    Takanori Gomi
    Tyson Griffin

    Nate Diaz and Diego Sanchez are fighting at welterweight.

    Griffin, Guida, Stevenson and Guillard haven't really done anything lately to deserve ranking above him, imo.

    I will admit top 5 was a stretch.

    Sanchez and Diaz have both said they are returning to 155 after their next fights.

    So Griffin, Guida, Stevenson and Guillard haven't really done anything lately to deserve ranking above Miller? Well what has Miller done to deserve ranking above them?

    The best name on Miller's resume is his last opponent Gleison Tibau, who guys like Griffin, Stevenson, and Guillard have already beat. Bartimus, Bocek, Wiman, and Danzig are good wins too but Miller's recent resume pails in comparison to that of Stevenson (Fisher, Diaz, Guillard, Pellegrino, Tibau), Griffin (Dos Anjos, Guida, Tavares, Tibau), Guida (Diaz, Dos Anjos, Arelio, Danzig), and Guillard (Tibau, Stephens, Siver).

    Will it continue to grow and is it evolving in a positive way though?

    Brazil will continue to thrown up the odd great fighter but generally as I said I think we've seen a noteble reduction in kickboxers, sambo fighters, judoka etc moving into MMA. Wrestlers have a sure route and little ability to earn money in their own sport so there switching across but its generally needed promoters to go out and sign up guys from other sports.

    Alot of the evolution isnt a positive for me either, from a realistic fighting point of which I don't think theres been that much advancement from 4-5 years ago. Whats changed is I'd say fighters looking to exploit the rules, judging and enviroment far more than they did in the past.

    The evolution is that people like the Ruffo brothers are cross training in MMA at the outset instead of focusing on one discipline.

    MMA has reached that point in popularity where promoters don't have to look to other sports for talent.

    There is a vast pipeline of fighters coming from MMA specific schools, there is really no need to go chasing long shots that are coming straight from other sports into the top level of competition.

    What has always happened, and will continue to, is guys who want to do MMA will go to an MMA gym, and then work up the ladder.
