It appears Joe Cortez is now recanting his statement that he made a verbal instruction to start the action. Initial statement: This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected
Ortiz was a little ***** mental midget who got his ass punk'd, there's really nothing else to know about this who situation.
It’s hard to know what the **** he really did. From viewing, his call for them to box was a very feeble one. It wasn’t a clear, convincing command, especially when you consider the fact that as soon as he says it, he completely takes his eyes off the action and starts talking to the time keeper. Now, in a situation like that where a very dirty and dangerous foul has just happened, adrenaline and tempers are at a high, and the risk of retaliation and more fouls can be rapidly increased....why the **** would you not keep a vigilant eye on the two fighters coming back into battle? What if it was someone else less professional than Floyd, who decided to even the score by illegal means? Not only would Cortez failed to have stopped it, but he wouldn’t have even noticed another foul taking place. The idiot lost control of the whole situation. Inexcusable. Had he been clear with his instructions, we wouldn't have seen such a controversial, and disappointing, ending.
Ortiz made a critical error by not being ready at all times, but if Cortez wasn't incompetent, this fight would not have ended in the 4th round. I believe Floyd was still on his way to a victory, but at least Ortiz still would've had a punchers chance.
I agree. If Cortez was as clear as he should have been, Ortiz wouldn't have been in such a vulnerable state where he would have been knocked out. That's not to say he definitely wouldn't try to apologize again, but knowing the fight has started, he would have reacted slightly quicker and braced himself better for the punch - instead of looking at Cortez like :ahhhh
Cortez, how about saying 'box', ffs. Very bad refereeing. But I think Ortiz suffers from the same type of mental midget syndrome that Cintron suffers from.
I believe this whole mess was Ortiz's fault, that said isn't the main job of a referee to protect the fighters. Its clear that in real time, Ortiz did not hear Joe's call to resume the action, and so didn't a lot of people including myself. that says to me that Joe was not clear enough with his instructions and made a mistake that cost a fighter. I have seen the replays and i see Joe wave the fighters together and say lets go but i have always thought a ref was supposed to say box or fight and do that hand sign. Boxing needs a clear set of rules and procedures that would do away with ridiculous BS that hurts the sport, I think refs and judges a given way to much leeway to make things up as they go.
Cortez was not even looking when the punches landed. How did he know if they were legal blows or not? Why was he counting? Floyd could have kicked Ortiz in the ***** for all he knew. Ortiz said he didn't hear Cortez give the command to resume the fight. Mayweather said he didn't hear Cortez give the command to resume the fight. Cortez said he didn't give the command to resume the fight. What's left to discuss?
I and everybody else who saw the broadcast and the numerous replays on youtube. heard him say let's go and waived them in. I've also heard Bayless use the same language in Mayweather-Mosley. There's really no dispute unless you just hate Floyd.
We all know what Ortiz did was wrong. But yes he was in the heat of battle and he made a mistake, thats what the reff is there for and he did take a point from Ortiz. So,with that said the fight would normaly resume correct...NOT! Not with Joe Cortez reffing the fight.Yes Ortiz did **** up by not protecting himself at all times but the reff(Cortez)****ed up the most because its his job to protect the fighters at all times and he didnt. He did not properly start the action or give a firm clear gesture so the two fighters could clearly see and hear. What reff tells two fighters after a break and mumbles "lets go" then steps aside and looks away outside the ring to leave the fighters at there own leisure,to do whatever they want??? Floyd Jr...Floyd Knew exactly what he was going to do from the minute Ortiz walked up to him the last time to appologize.Floyd didnt want to just get some getback with the first lefthook,Floyd was trying to KO Ortiz and finish the fight with that left right combo...Thats clear as day.So why if everyone including Mayweather Jr himself thinks Ortiz was so outmatched and Floyd was on his way to a clear and easy victory, would Floyd want to end the fight that way???"Its my fans,my fans mean everything." "without the fans im nothing" lol. Some way of looking out for your fans money. Then Floyd has the balls to say "you wanted a knockout,i gave you one." Yeah we wanted a knockout but not like that.Hitting a fighter with his hands at his sides and not even looking. Sneaky classless move on Floyds part imho. What Floyd did was legal (legal only because of an incompetent reff) but it isn't what a true professional champion does. Guess im just living in the past.
Cortez is a **** ref and he likes Mayweather too much. I can't believe they allowed him to ref that fight.
I disagree completly. Cortez said "Lets go", and how can that be misunderstood in a boxing ring? Ortiz had already quit, Floyd gave him a chance to switch back on, but he did not bother. So Floyd did the right thing and closed the show. Nothing Cortex could have done about it.
