I doubt Whitaker would win a round.

I think Pea would win a few rounds on ring generalship. Loses a UD though.

I have yet to see film of the titan who "mops the floor" with a properly trained, motivated Pernell Whitaker. He doesn't exist...not in my opinion. That includes even Mount Rushmore echelon guys like Benny Leonard and Duran at 135...but certainly leaves the door open for a welterweight Ray Robinson.

Whitaker is the best ring general I've ever seen. Flawed? Sure...but if he doesn't rank amongst the aforementioned fighters, and say a half dozen others at the pinnacle, as one of the immortals...well, you can't convince me he's not the first guy in that next tier.

grey makes a vital point that Pea will have a considerable advantage in experience. Ideally, i guess you prob go with the Hearns from Leonard 1. That, or the version that turned the great Pipino Cuevas into a cloud of pink mist. Either way, Tommy is a physical marvel at 147, a true phenom...but he's still not quite prime. The Pea of McGirt 2...even the Pea who stopped chopping up lines of blow juuuuuuuuust long enough to pass a drug test, then go about even against a DLH just entering his prime (I had a narrow win for Pea).. even that version would be a difficult puzzle to solve.

So as unique and challenging as Tommy's skillset was....I can't see a scenario where he carves Pea up and stops him. In a 15 round title fight, Hearns takes a not so close decision. But I don't see a route here.

To the op, quick question...Pea is smaller than Mayweather at 147? Or just shorter?

I think Hearns wins a decision. It will be a frustrating night for Tommy as he will be fighting one of the most slippery fighters of all time but Hearns is much bigger, hits harder, is a good boxer himself and has an excellent corner. Whitaker is an ATG and at 135 I think he can beat anyone who stepped into that weight class but he was always giving up physical advantages at 147 and he's going against THE GUY who had freak physical advantages at 147. Also Whitaker did have some pop even at 147, (usually not shown as he was content to thoroughly outbox his opponents) he does not have the type of power or physicality that gave Hearns trouble.

Honestly its such an ugly fight I haven't watched but maybe twice all these years. I had alot of rounds even. I remember at the end having it a draw the last time I viewed it. I didn't think either guy deserved to win. Pea should have kept his title.

I'd pick Tommy, but I don't think it would be totally one-sided at all.

No, I don't think Tommy mops the floor with Whitaker. I doubt anyone could. Pernell was too crafty, too smart.
Beat him? Sure. But it wouldn't be embarrassing or anything.

    Beats Pernell?: definitely
    Stops Penell?: possibly
Mops the floor with Pernell?: that is going a little too far. Pernell has the ability to at least be competitive with any fighter in history weighing 147 pounds or less.

Do you think Oscar was better than Hearns in any department?

Maybe lefthook to the head. Hearns actually had a wicked hook to the body. Possibly chin but with Whitaker that wouldn't come into play.
