I’m curious opinions here since a lot of people figured he go right through Moore in 55.

JJW of the first fight is the only problematical one for me.

I don't think so. I've never sat down and really done the comparisons myself, but Marciano had a large range of difficult styles that he overcame, and even he just barely won in some cases. His trump card was his consistency, his relentless stamina and punching power, and that's what carried the day for him several times. Tunney may have been the better pure boxer but his advantages were different to what Marciano's were. I suspect that a Walcott or Charles or Moore or even La Starza might like the slower tempo set by Tunney and win one or two from him.

tuney never proved he had the longevity at HW needed to do a Marciano, though he would surely have enough to take Marciano best opposition, they were by no means "stellar examples".

damn the words of my biochem lecturer about my exam result, that stuck with me.

So Tunney could go right through Walcott, Charles, Moore in back to back to back fashion?

Do you rate Tunney above Marciano at heavyweight?

Considering Tunney dropped 2 to Greb, I think if he had to go 3 in a row vs Walcott I, Charles I, and Moore he would drop 1.

No Tunney retired too soon to rate him higher at HW. That doesnt stop him from beating the version of fighters Rocky beat though. Primes mite play out differently.

Hey Q we are pretty far apart in our HW picture but that's not important.
Be safe out there and come home to your family. That's what important.
    Time to go train

What was Tunney's heavyweight record... 5-0, 6-0? And for all the fretting over the Rock facing small guys with no tread on the tires... Gibbons in his last fight, Dempsey in 2 of his final 3 fights, 167 pound Greb rank as his best wins in the division... or you could include Carpentier, former heavyweight title contestant, in his 100th fight.

That's not a lot of precedent upon which to draw.

No. Or at least I don't think Tunney's record at all backs up that he is going to sweep Marciano's opposition.

Tunney in his own day didn't win 5 of his fights. He drew with K. O. Jaffe (6-22-2 career record) and Tommy Gavigan (24-17-8 career record). Gavigan had lost 13 of his last 15 going into the Tunney fight. So simply assuming Tunney beats all the early Marciano opponents is an assumption I don't support.

As for the name fighters, well there is a lot more guys who weigh over 190, who can box, and who can punch. Tunney spent much of his career fighting light-heavies and even middles. He more or less fought on equal terms with Greb and Loughran despite about 10 lb. weight pulls, plus Loughran being a teenager. I don't see anyone remotely like Walcott, Charles, or Moore on his resume. Even Rex Layne is bigger and better than any heavyweight Tunney fought other than the aging and inactive Dempsey.

So I would expect Tunney to suffer several losses against Marciano's competition.

He would beat most for sure, but wouldn't run the gauntlet
