I can't remember a single time I was in the ring and thought "Damn that punch slipped right off my face."
It helps with avoiding abrasions. That's all it's supposed to do. You get a pair of new gloves, or a particularly dried-out pair, and they can blotch someone up pretty badly if there's no vaseline. Doesn't lessen the impact of a solid punch.
